Assignment

This week, we will continue to review for benchmark. Our ELA benchmark is next Tuesday, so we are making sure to hit the important standards. We will be focusing on all the power standards studied which contain:

1. Summary (summing up the main parts of a text)
2. Central idea (the main idea of a text) and supporting details (evidence used to find the central idea of text)
3. Theme (the lesson or moral of the story; ex. "Never give up," Love conquers all," etc.
4. Citing
5. Inferences (make an educated guess based on prior knowledge and textual evidence (quotes/evidence from the text). Examples of making an inference: Pinocchio's nose grows when he tells people that he has gone to school. Our inference is that he is not telling the truth because we already know his nose grows when he does not tell the truth.
6. Citing- Finding evidence in the text to support your answer
7. Key events, individuals, ideas (important details about an event, individual, or idea)
8. Figurative language (Something used as non literal language. Ex. I could eat a horse. This does not mean someone will literally eat a horse; it means they are hungry, so they could eat much food at that time.)

Our writing this week will focus on W.6.1-Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

Monday and Tuesday homework both contain questions that have the above standards mentioned with a short informative text to read for each day.

Bell ringers, vocabulary cartoons, homework, and homework calendar are attached.

Also, we will have a quiz on academic vocabulary words Friday. I will attach the words as well.

Have a great week!

Assignment

This week, we will continue to review for benchmark. We will be focusing on two important power standards:
  • RI.6.3 Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).

RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings

We will also be reviewing the following standards:
  • L.6.4 : Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown or multiple meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate
  • W.6.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well chosen details, and well structured event sequences
The bell ringers, vocabulary cartoons, homework, and homework calendar are attached.

The homework for Monday is a review packet. The homework questions contain summary (summing up the main parts of a text), central idea (the main idea of a text), supporting details (evidence used to find the central idea of text), and theme (the lesson or moral of the story; ex. "Never give up," Love conquers all," etc. The text is called "Dust," and it explains a family's experience of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Monday night's homework is #1-5, and Tuesday night's homework is #6-10.

Have a great week!

Assignment

Hello,

This week will start review for benchmark. We will be focusing on two important power standards:
  • RL.6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text
  • RL.6.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text based upon this determination.

The homework for Monday is an inference packet. To make an inference is to make an educated guess based on prior knowledge and textual evidence (quotes/evidence from the text).Examples of making an inference: Pinocchio's nose grows when he tells people that he has gone to school. Our inference is that he is not telling the truth because we already know his nose grows when he does not tell the truth.

The homework for Tuesday is a theme packet. To identify the theme, one must figure out the lesson that the author is trying to show. Examples of theme are: "Never give up," "Don't be greedy," etc.

Have a great week!

Assignment

Hello,

This week, I will be teaching the following standards:
RI.6.8 Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.

L.6.5b Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., cause/effect, part/whole, item/category) to better understand each of the words.

W.6.1 Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

To sum it up, we are still focusing on argumentative writing and learning analogies.

We are also covering past standards to get ready for benchmark. The homework for the week comes from the "Grade 6 Natural Resources" attachment. Monday's homework #1-5, and #6-10 is for Tuesday night. The rest of the attachments are classwork and bell ringers. The homework calendar is also attached. We do have a test tomorrow, and it will be focused on all the standards I have taught so far to get ready for benchmark as well.

Let's have a great week!
