Week 7, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will have a pretty easy week.  Students will be taking state tests this week and will not meet classes on some days. Assignments and homework are as follows:
Monday: Today students will begin to discuss Chapter 14, Section 3, beginning  on page 386 of the textbook and going through a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 3, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 14: Vocabulary review. Students need to complete the vocab review worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section. Students will also have 1 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Case #29. Court case will be due on Friday! 8th grade Alphabets will also be due on Friday!!
Tuesday: Students will be taking their ELA State Test today. 
Wednesday: Students will be taking their Writing State Test today. 
Thursday: Students will be taking their Science State Test today. 
Friday: Students will continue to work on any assignments from Chapter 14 that were not completed and turned in on time due to boot camp and state testing. Students will use the class period today to work on their 8th grade Alphabet Projects that are due today. Students may be given till Monday to complete the project due to boot camp and state testing throughout the week. Students may also use this time to catch up on any missing Supreme Court Cases from the nine weeks. Supreme Court Case #29 is due today. Students will finish their 8th grade alphabet if it was not completed in class today.  Alphabets are due Monday!

Week 6, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be working in Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship as we near the end of the year and wrap up the textbook.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows: 
Monday: 8th Grade will be in boot camp today!
Tuesday: Students will be shown on the map today exactly which counties will be on their last MS Counties test on Friday. Students will then begin to discuss Chapter 14, Section 1, beginning  on page 376 of the textbook and going through a power point presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 1, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship Research. Students need to complete the local government and citizenship research  worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section. Students will also have their final counties test on Friday for the southern counties in the state. Students will also have 1 Supreme Court Case due this week, Case #28. Court cases will be due on Friday! Chapter 14 Vocabulary is also due on Friday. 
Wednesday: 8th graders will be in boot camp today! 
Thursday: Today students will begin to discuss Chapter 14, Section 2, beginning  on page 382 of the textbook and going through a power point presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 2, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship Know Your Facts. Students need to complete the local government and citizenship know your facts  worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section. Chapter 14 Vocabulary is due tomorrow also. Students will also have Supreme Court Case 28 due this Friday. The Southern counties test is tomorrow as well!!
Friday: Students will take their final MS Counties test today on the southern part of the state. After completing the test, students will read pages 396 - 397 in their textbook about the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. After reading these pages, students will go to the website The Anti-Slavery Alphabet | Digital Archives MDAH (ms.gov) to see pictures of the Anti-Slavery Alphabet. Students will use the Anti-Slavery Alphabet to write an alphabet of their own for the 8th grader as they prepare to leave the middle school and go to the high school. For some this may mean sports and a chance to shine as an athlete, for others it may mean earning a scholarship and fulfilling their dream of being a doctor or lawyer one day.  What does it mean to you?  Students are to write something for all 26 letters of the alphabet. Alphabets will be colorful and creative on white copy paper. Students will finish their 8th grade alphabet if it was not completed in class today.  Alphabets are due next Friday!

Week 5, 4th Nine Weeks

I hope this week finds everyone safe from the storms from last week.  Our week was unexpectedly cut short last week, so this week will be a carryover of what should have been finished up for last week. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
 
Monday: 8th Grade will be in boot camp today!
 
Tuesday: Today students will discuss Chapter 13, Section 3, beginning on page 358 of the textbook and going through a powerpoint presentation detailing key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. After completing the lecture, students will be given a Graphic Organizer to complete comparing and contrasting the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Mississippi legislature. Students will use their textbook to complete this assignment. Chapter 13 vocab is due today!!  Students will need to finish the Venn Diagram that was given in class today for homework if it was not completed. Supreme Court Case #27 is due on Friday!! Students need to have the guided reading from Chapter 13 Section 3 completed for homework if not completed in class today. Students will also be given a study guide for Chapter 13 that will be due on Friday. Chapter 13 test will be given on Friday!!
 
Wednesday: 8th graders will be in boot camp today! 
 
Thursday: Students will use the class period today to prepare for the Chapter 13 test that will be given tomorrow. Students will be given a copy of the new vocabulary for Chapter 14 to begin defining, identifying, and listing important details about. Chapter 14 vocabulary will be due next Friday, April 19th. Students need to continue to work on the Chapter 14 vocabulary that was given after the test today. It is due next Friday, April 19th.

Week 4, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies  we will be finishing up Chapter 13: Federal and State Government with a chapter test on Friday and begin chapter 14. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:

Week 3, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin Chapter 13 on State and Federal Governments. Boot Camp will still be going on so some of the days may be mixed up with scheduling.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: No School!
Tuesday: To begin class today students will be shown exactly which counties will be on their Mississippi Counties Map test this Friday. This test will cover the middle of the state, all central counties. Today students will discuss Chapter 13, Section 1 beginning  on page 348 of the textbook and going through a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 1, students will be given the vocabulary for Chapter 13. Vocabulary will be due next Tuesday, April 9th. Students need to work on the vocabulary that was assigned today, as well as the guided reading for sections 1. Vocab is due next Tuesday, April 9th. Students will also have a Supreme Court Case, Case # 26 due on Friday! Students will also take their second Mississippi Counties test Friday on the middle portion of the state. 
Wednesday: 8th graders will be in boot camp today!  
Thursday: Today students will discuss Chapter 13, Section 2 beginning  on page 351 of the textbook and going through a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 13 Section 1 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 2, students will be given a worksheet to complete on the Mississippi State Legislature. Students need to complete the MS State Legislature  worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for section 2. Chapter 13 vocabulary is also due on Tuesday, April 9th. Students will also have a Supreme Court Case, Case # 26 due tomorrow! Students will also take their second Mississippi Counties test tomorrow on the middle portion of the state. Study study study!!
Friday: Students will take their Mississippi Counties test today on the central portion of counties in the state. After completing the counties test students will be given a Graphic Organizer to complete comparing and contrasting the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Mississippi legislature. Students will use their textbook to complete this assignment. Students may also use this time to work on their Chapter 13 vocabulary that was given on Tuesday. Vocab is due on Tuesday, April 9th. Students will need to finish the Venn Diagram that was given in class today for homework if it was not completed. Students also need to work on the Chapter 13 Vocab that is due on Tuesday, April 9th.

Week 2, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village and having a chapter test on Thursday. Boot Camp will also begin this week so days may be mixed up some weeks, but the work will still be due!  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows: 
 
Monday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village, Section 3 on page 330 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. After completing the Guided Reading for section 3, students will be given a study guide for Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village.. The study guide will be due on Thursday, March 28, when the students will have a test on Chapter 12. Students will have Supreme Court Case #25 due on Thursday since we are out of school on Friday for Easter break! Students also need to be continuously working on their Mississippi Brochures using the Canva website. Brochures are due on Thursday! Chapter 12 Section 3 Guided Reading is due tomorrow if it was not completed in class today.  The Chapter 12 study guide will be due on Thursday. 
 
Tuesday: Students will take the entire class period today to continue to work on their Chapter 12 study guides that were given in class yesterday. Students will use their textbooks on Canvas to work independently through sections 1, 2, and 3 of Chapter 12 to complete the study guide. Chapter test for Chapter 12 is Thursday. Study guides are to be completed by Thursday!  Chapter 12 test is also Thursday! Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case (25) due Thursday, as well as their Mississippi Brochure.
 
Wednesday: Students will use the day today to continue to work on their Chapter 12 study guides that were given on Monday. Students will work independently to complete the study guides and prepare for the chapter 12 test on Thursday. Students may also use this time to work on their Mississippi Brochures if they have not finished them. Students will make these brochures using the Canva website. Study guides are to be completed by tomorrow! Chapter 12 test is also tomorrow! Study study study!! Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case (25) due tomorrow, as well as their Mississippi Brochures.  
 
Thursday: Students will take a test today on Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village. After completing the test, students will be given an article to read on the BP Oil Spill entitled BP Oil Spill: Facts and Environmental Impact. Students will read the article and go to Canvas and look at the pictures located there to see the impact the oil spill made on the animals and vegetation of the area. Students will then write a 1 paragraph summary of the article, followed by a paragraph of personal response on how the article made them feel. What was the impact on the economy and how did it affect the people as well? Do you agree with underground oil drilling?? Students will also turn in their Mississippi Brochures today by sharing the project with Ms. Thompson in their email. Students will need to finish their BP Oil Spill summary and personal reflection paragraph for homework if it was not finished in class.

Week 1, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village and prepare for our upcoming Counties tests during this nine weeks. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Today students will be given a copy of the 82 counties located within the state of Mississippi. Students will be tested on the top portion of the map on Friday! The class will visit a website 15 weird Mississippi town names and how they got them (hattiesburgamerican.com) and look at 15 towns in Mississippi with weird names.  This will be a fun and interesting activity for the students to see how many they have heard of!  Students will then use the remainder of the class period to write a 5 paragraph essay about these 15 towns, which ones were their favorites, and why.  Students will need to take note of the interesting things about these towns and how they got their names. This essay will be due tomorrow. Students will also be given a list of the Chapter 12 Vocabulary to begin defining, identifying, and noting important aspects of the people and places. Vocabulary will be due on Thursday! Students will need to complete the essay that was assigned in class today for homework if it was not completed in class.  Chapter 12 vocab is due on Thursday! Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case, 24, due Friday, as well as the top portion of the counties test. 
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village, Section 1 on page 320 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 12 Matching. Students will need to complete the guided reading and the worksheet given in class today for homework if not completed in class.

Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case (24) due Friday, as well as the top counties test.  Vocab is also due on Thursday!

Wednesday: Today students will discuss Chapter 12, Section 2, beginning  on page 326 of the textbook and going through a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a worksheet, Ch 12: Vocabulary Review to complete in class. Students need to complete the vocabulary worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading that was given in class today for section 2.  Chapter 12 vocabulary is also due tomorrow. Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case (24) due Friday, as well as the top counties test tomorrow.  Study study study!!

Thursday: Today students will research the state of Mississippi to see what all it offers in terms of tourism and traveling. Students will make a brochure on the state of Mississippi, including recreational activities, (fairs, festivals, Ethnic groups, etc), nature (hiking, sightseeing, history, etc) popular places to visit, etc. Students will make their brochure using the Canva website.  Brochures will be due on Thursday, March 28th.  Brochures must be complete, with information and pictures, facts and interesting information about our state.  Make sure to incorporate some history into your brochure and what would attract people to our state. Students need to be continuously working on their brochures that will be due on Thursday, March 28th. Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case (24) due tomorrow, as well as the top counties test tomorrow.  Study study study!!

Week 8, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be bringing the nine weeks to a close.  Next week will be benchmark testing, so we will be finishing up chapter 10 this week as well as a quick glance and open book test for chapter 11 by Friday. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: 8th grade students will be in boot camp today to prepare for upcoming Benchmark tests next week. Students will need to study for the Chapter 10 test that will be given tomorrow!
Tuesday: Students will take a Chapter 10: The Civil Rights Movement Test today. After completing the test, students will be given the Chapter 11 vocabulary list today to begin defining and identifying important people, places, and times. Vocab will be due Friday, March 1st. Students will have their final Supreme Court Case, #23, due this Friday. Supreme Court Cases will be graded and immediately given back to give the Supreme Court Case Binder grade on Friday as well. Chapter 11 Vocabulary will be due on Friday, March 1st.  We will also have our last chapter test for chapter 11 this Friday.  The Brown vs. Board of Education project that is due on Wednesday will now be due on Friday, March 1st as well, and will be counted as the Nine Weeks Test grade. 
Wednesday: 8th grade students will be out of the classroom today due to boot camp to prepare for benchmark testing next week.
Thursday: Students will orally go over the PowerPoint presentation today of all 3 sections included in Chapter 11. Students must be attentive and be ready to answer any questions pertaining to Chapter 11. After completing the PowerPoint presentation students will be given the guided reading for all 3 sections of Chapter 11 to prepare them for the open book test that will be given tomorrow. Students will read the chapters and answer all questions for sections 1-3 independently. Students will complete the guided readings for Chapter 11 tonight for homework.  This will get them ready for the open book Chapter 11 test that will be given tomorrow. Chapter 11 vocab is due tomorrow as well. Supreme Court Case #23 is due tomorrow. This will be the last Supreme Court Case of the nine weeks, therefore the students need to have all cases organized in their binders and ready for their Supreme Court Case Binder Test grade that will be given tomorrow as well.  Students will also have their Brown vs. Board of Education Project ready to turn in tomorrow for their Nine Weeks Test grade. 
Friday: Students will take an open book test today on Chapter 11: Modern Mississippi: 1971 to the Present. Students will also have their Supreme Court Case Binders organized and ready to turn in today for a test grade. Students will turn in their Brown vs the Board of Education Projects today as their Nine Weeks Test grade!

Week 7, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up our chapter on the Civil Rights Movement and preparing for a test next Tuesday. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: Today is the students' I-Ready day to work on remediation assignments from their math or ELA teachers. Students will be monitored and graded on the work completed today during the class period. 
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 10: The Civil Rights Movement, 1960 - 1971, Section 3 on page 278 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will read an excerpt from the Letter From a Birmingham Jail that was written by Martin Luther King Jr.  As the students read the text, they will mark the text, highlight vocabulary, circle key terms, and underline claims / main ideas. Then, on the lines provided, they will write their own letter ​to King about the state of race relations in America today, more than fifty years after he wrote his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Make sure you refer and respond to some of the particular points King makes in his letter. Students will need to finish the guided reading and the letter to Dr. King that were given in class today for homework if they are not completed in class. Students will also have 1 Supreme Court Case, Case #22,  due this Friday. Students also need to be continuously working on their Brown vs the Board of Education Project that is due on Wednesday, Feb 28th. 
Wednesday: Students will watch Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have A Dream Speech at I Have a Dream, Martin Luther King Jr. Full Speech Best Audio - Bing video Students will then complete a worksheet on the I Have A Dream Speech of 11 questions that define vocabulary used in the speech, identifies similes and metaphors, makes comparisons to Abraham Lincoln, and makes the students rewrite in their own words.  Students will be given a short packet of information on some of the key events of the Civil Rights Movement that will help them with dates and key events on their test on Tuesday.  Students will need to complete the worksheet explaining these events and what their significance was for the Civil Rights Movement. Students will need to complete the worksheet on the I Have A Dream Speech, as well as the packet of info given today for homework if they were not completed in class. Students will also be given a study guide for Chapter 10 that will be due on Tuesday.  Chapter test will be Tuesday.
Thursday: Students will be given a packet today, The Road to Civil Rights. Students will read the material that is presented about discrimination, important people during this time, activists and how they chose to make changes for the better, and eventually how change came to be, in the White House and in the law. Students will then complete the activity pages that follow. Students will also have a worksheet for homework, a vocabulary review sheet. Supreme Court Case #22 is due on Friday. Students also need to be continuously working on their Brown vs Board of Education Project that is due on Wednesday Feb 28th.
Friday: Students will spend today completing the Chapter 10 study guide that was given on Wednesday. Students will work independently through Sections 1-3 to complete each question correctly to study for the test. Students will need to make sure they have all the notes, vocabulary, and study guide materials completed and organized to be prepared for the chapter 10 test on Friday. Students will complete their Chapter 10 study guides in order to review for the Chapter 10 test that will be given on Tuesday, Feb 27th.

Week 6, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin Chapter 10 on the Civil Rights Movement.  We will discuss many of the events that happened throughout the 1960s that changed they dynamic of the way things were done in the United States and especially in Mississippi. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Today is the students' I-Ready day to work on remediation assignments from their math or ELA teachers. Students will be monitored and graded on the work completed today during the class period. 
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 10: The Civil Rights Movement, 1960 - 1971. Discussion will begin on Section 1 on page 266 of the textbook and a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the section. Students will be given a project today, Brown vs Board of Education. Students will construct a PowerPoint or google slides presentation with 27 slides to research this case. Projects will be due on Wednesday, February 28th. Students will also be given a Readworks Article “The Courage to Take Action: A Lesson from Rosa Parks to work on at the end of the class period. Students will read Chapter 10, Section 1 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading for this section if not completed in class today. Students will also complete the Readworks Article “The Courage to Take Action: A Lesson From Rosa Parks” for homework if it was not completed in class today. Supreme Court Case #21 is due on Friday.
Wednesday: Students will take the class period today to begin a 68 slide presentation on the Civil Rights Movement . (We will finish this slide show tomorrow) Students will be prepared to answer any questions about the slide show through class discussion and any notes that may be taken.  Students will then receive worksheets to complete on Ms. Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott.  Students will need to complete the worksheets from class today, Ms. Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott for homework if they were not completed in class. 
Thursday: Students will take the class period today to continue the 68 slide presentation on the Civil Rights Movement .  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about the slide show through class discussion and any notes that may be taken.  Students will be given a worksheet to complete at the end of the class period, Sequencing Events.  If this worksheet is not completed in class, the students will complete it for homework. Students will also complete the Readworks Article “Voting Rights Act” worksheet that will be given for homework. Chapter 10 vocab is due on Monday! Students will need to complete the worksheets given in class today if it was not completed, and they will also have 1 Supreme Court Case due this week, #21. 
Friday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 10: The Civil Rights Movement, 1960 - 1971, Section 2 on page 274 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will complete the Civil Rights Movement Worksheet where they will take a list of events and put them into chronological order while answering what it was, when it happened, who was involved, where it happened, and list one major cause and effect of the event.  This should be done on notebook paper.  (Students will not complete the vocab or one page paper of this assignment) Students will need to complete the timeline for homework if it was not completed in class today.  Chapter 10 Vocabulary is due on Monday!

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 9: Conflict and Change and preparing for a test on Friday. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: Today is the students' I-Ready day to work on remediation assignments from their math or ELA teachers. Students will be monitored and graded on the work completed today during the class period. Students will receive their Chapter 9 study guides today to begin working on. Study guides are due on Thursday.
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 9 Section 3 beginning on page 254 of the textbook and have a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a Guided Reading for this section today, as well as be prepared to answer any questions about chapter 9 Section 3 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. Students will then be given an article, NAACP, to read and a list of questions to complete pertaining to the article. Students will read chapter 9 section 3 of the textbook and complete the guided reading for this section if not completed in class today. They will also need to complete the worksheet, NAACP for homework if it was not completed in class. Supreme Court Case #20 is due Friday. Chapter 9 study guides are due on Thursday!
Wednesday: Students will watch a video today that focuses and looks into the Great Depression and what led up to the events which caused the Great Depression called 1929 Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression - Documentary. After the video students will write a one paragraph summary about the video, detailing things that were mentioned about the 1929 Stock Market Crash and how it impacted our nation. Why did the Great Depression happen??  Students will work on the study guide to prepare for the Chapter 9 test Friday. Supreme Court Case #20 is due Friday. 
Thursday: Today the students will have a review for a test on Chapter 9. Students will go over the chapter 9 study guide to ensure that every student has the correct answers to prepare for the test. Students will need to make sure they have all the notes, vocabulary, and study guide materials completed and organized to be prepared for the chapter 9 test tomorrow. Chapter 9 test tomorrow!!  Study!! Supreme Court Case #20 is due tomorrow. 
Friday: Students will have a test today on Chapter 9: Conflict and Change. After the test students will be given a copy of the Chapter 10 vocabulary to begin defining, identifying important people and places, and taking note of key events and times. Vocabulary will be due on Monday, Feb 19th. Students will be given two Readworks articles when they finish their test today, Robert Kennedy on Civil Rights, 1963 and The Green Book: Traveling the Jim Crow South.  If they do not finish these articles in class, they will finish them for homework. This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin Chapter 9: Conflict and Change and begin looking at some very important times in history, like the Great Depression and Civil Rights Movement. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:

After class discussion students will be given a worksheet to complete, Who Am I? Students will read Chapter 9 Section 1 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading for this section if not completed in class today, as well as the worksheet, Who Am I? Supreme Court Case #19 is due Friday!
Wednesday: Students will spend the day learning about Linda Brown and the Brown vs the Board of Education Court Case. Students will begin with a short article on Linda Brown and her life. Students will then read about human rights and discuss the story of Prince Edward County schools.  Students will read over the human rights from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as look at photos comparing the schools in Prince Edward schools by comparison of race. Then the class will read through an article “The Story of Prince Edward County Schools - Closing the Schools.” Students will then be given a biography of Barbara Jones and one of Robert F. Kennedy to read. This activity will take 2 days to complete, therefore we will continue it tomorrow. Students will answer a short questionnaire on the story of Prince Edward County Schools.  Thinking through their daily life, how would they feel if……… Students will complete the Readworks Article “Different Paths” and answer all the questions to turn in tomorrow.  Students will also have Supreme Court Case #19 due this Friday.
Thursday: Students will continue to discuss the Brown vs the Board of Education Supreme Court Case and the impact that was made on the country and people at that time. Students will be given a handout on the story of the Prince Edward County Schools. Students will read background information, how the fight began, a deeper look at 1954: Brown vs. the Board of Education, 1959: Prince Edward County closes its public schools, 1961: the Federal Government gets involved, and 1963: The Free School Association of Prince Edward County.  Students will then complete an analysis of Prince Edward schools closings.  Students will write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) for each question in the analysis. Students will complete the analysis of the Prince Edward County Schools closings and the case of Brown vs the Board of Education for homework if it was not completed in class. Students will also complete the Understanding the Facts questions 1-10 on page 289 of the textbook. Students are to write questions and answers. Supreme Court Case #19 is due tomorrow.
Friday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 9 Section 2 beginning on page 247 of the textbook and have a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment for this section to complete as they take individual notes for the section. The class will then go to the website https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/mississippi/photos-taken-in-ms-during-wwii/ and look at each of the 17 photos.  The class will discuss the meaning and symbolism within each photo. Students will read Chapter 9 Section 2 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading for this section if not completed in class today. The students will have a vocabulary review worksheet to complete for homework.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up our unit on the Women's Suffrage Movement. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will be given a packet of worksheets, Abigail Adams, The Seneca Falls Convention, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, A Special Partnership, The Bloomer Costume, Taxation Without Representation, Send a Petition, African Americans for Women's Suffrage, The Western Vote, A Cartoonist’s Look at Woman’s Rights, Susan B. Anthony Votes, The Apotheosis of Suffrage, Alice Paul, Letters from a Suffragette: Alice Paul, Parading for Suffrage, Picketing the White House, Why Women Should Vote, Campaigning for Suffrage, and the Nineteenth Amendment to complete this week as a review and preparation for the test on Thursday.  This packet will be due on Friday. Students will also have 2 worksheets to complete, “Grace Abbott” and “Alice Paul:” for homework. Supreme Court Case #18, as well as the packet that was given today is due Friday!
Tuesday: Students will be given an 18-question worksheet to complete as we navigate through the slideshow today. Students will need to take notes and complete this worksheet to help serve as a study guide for the unit test next week. After the lecture, students will continue to work on worksheets, the Women’s Suffrage Movement Part 1, the Women’s Suffrage Movement Part 2, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and a writing activity. Students will complete the worksheets given in class today for homework. Students should also begin studying and reading over notes and vocab to prepare for a unit test on Friday. Supreme Court Case #18 and their packets are due this Friday!
Wednesday: Students will then be divided into two groups, one pro women’s suffrage, and one anti women’s suffrage. Students will engage in a silent debate. Students will be given a packet of material to help in their debate to argue their point. Students will be given 10 minutes to study their material to justify why women should or should not be allowed to vote. Each group will be given one chance to argue for their side, and then they will swap papers. Each side will be given around 10 minutes to respond to the opposing side arguments.  We will then read the arguments and responses orally in class. Students should also begin studying and reading over notes and vocab to prepare for a unit test on Friday. Students also need to remember their packets that were given on Monday are due Friday!! Students will be given 3 posters to analyze that were used as propaganda during the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Students will complete the analysis worksheet for the 3 posters. Also, Supreme Court Case #18 is due on Friday.
Thursday: Students will be broken up into teams today and play a game to review for the Women’s Suffrage Movement unit test that will be given tomorrow. Students will answer questions in teams to earn points. The team with the most points will win. After the review for the test, students will have a few minutes to work on their packets that were given on Monday that are due tomorrow. During this time students will also be given back vocabulary and other assignments from this unit to help them prepare for the test tomorrow! Students should study and read over notes and vocab to prepare for a unit test tomorrow. Students also need to remember their packets that were given on Monday are due tomorrow!!  Supreme Court Case #18 is due tomorrow!
Friday: Students will take a unit test today on the women’s suffrage movement. As the students complete the test on the Women’s Suffrage Movement, they will be given time to work on the packet of worksheets that is due today!  Students will be given a vocabulary list, including important events for chapter 9 to begin defining, identifying and listing important aspects for that term. Vocabulary will be due next Thursday. Chapter 9 vocabulary is due next Thursday!

Welcome back again!  I hope everyone enjoyed their extended holiday break due to the icy weather. This has cut our week even shorter so the assignments will be less than normal. This week in Mississippi Studies we will be continuing with our unit on the Women's Suffrage Movement. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:

Friday: Today students will be given a mock test to complete in class. Students will be allowed to use their textbooks, the internet, or other activities throughout the week to assist them in choosing the correct answer on their worksheet. Students will receive a grade for the assignment, it will be returned to them as a study guide for an upcoming test next week on this unit. As the students complete the mock test, they will have a Readworks article to complete, “The Fight for Women’s Suffrage” Students may complete the mock test for homework if they were unable to complete it in class today. Again, they may use their textbook, the internet, or any activities presented in class to assist in finding the correct answers. Week 1, 3rd Nine Weeks

Welcome back!!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break and is ready for the second half of the year.  We will begin these nine weeks by kicking off with the Women's Suffrage movement. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: No school!
Tuesday: Students will be given a timeline of events, “Teach a Girl to Lead” of how the 19th Amendment came to be and important events that took place. Students will read aloud in class and discuss these events. Students will be given a list of important vocabulary terms, people, and dates for this unit to define and list key details about. Students will work on this for the remainder of the class period today.  Vocabulary is due on Friday. Students will receive an article “Aint I a Woman?” to read and answer the questions following the passage. Supreme Court Case #16 is due Friday as well.
Wednesday: Students will be broken up into 5 groups. Each group will have a source document to analyze and answer questions about. Groups will work collectively to read each source, determine why the source was written, and try to understand the meaning of each document. Each group must turn in answers from every member of the group. Students will also be given a worksheet to complete, “The Fight For Women’s Suffrage Worksheet” that tells the story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her fight for women’s suffrage. Students will complete the worksheet given in class today: “The Fight For Women’s Suffrage” if not finished in class today. The students will continue to work on the vocab list that is due on Friday, as well as their Supreme Court Case.
Thursday: Students will be given a vocabulary packet today with 10 vocabulary words and their definition accompanied by a photo. Students will have to describe the picture and write a complete sentence using the vocab word that describes the photo. Then students will fill out a chart of the words, definitions, draw a picture describing the word, give an example, and a non-example for all 10 words. After completing the vocabulary assignment, students will be given an article to read, “American Women Get the Vote in 1920” and answer the questions that follow. Students will need to complete both the packet of vocabulary that was given in class today and the worksheet “American Women Get the Vote in 1920” for homework if they were not completed in class today. Women’s Suffrage Vocab is also due tomorrow along with Supreme Court Case #16 for this week. 
Friday: Today students will focus on a lesson dealing with 2 very important figures in history that fought for women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Students will be given a packet of information, “Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony 38”, and inserts from history of these two women, their lives, and some of the important events that took place because of these women. The class will read through the information presented and participate in a group discussion. Students will take the last remaining minutes of class to complete the questions included in the packet. Students will complete the packet given in class today if not finished and turn in on Friday, as well as complete the Readworks Article entitled “19th Amendment” to complete for homework.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up the Nine Weeks with a quick look into Chapter 8.  Students will also be given their Nine Weeks Test projects this week.  It will be a busy week!  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will be given their Nine Weeks Project today to begin working on. Students will each be given an amendment to the Constitution to research, write a 4 page paper on, create a creative component for, and cite 5 sources on a works cited page. This project will count as the student’s Nine Weeks Test grade.  It will be due on Wednesday, December 13th. If the benchmark schedule allows, we will present our creative components in class on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week. Today students will begin discussing Chapter 8: Revolt of the Rednecks, 1900 - 1932. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this section. After class discussion, the students will be given a worksheet to complete on the political cartoon that is given. Students will read the Of Special Interest section on page 219 of the textbook.  Students  will be given a political cartoon of President Theodore Roosevelt to analyze. Students will read Chapter 8 Section 1 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading for this section if it was not completed in class today. Students will also need to complete the political cartoon analysis that was given in class today as well. Chapter 8 vocabulary is due on Wednesday, as well as their last Supreme Court Case of the nine weeks, Case #15 that will be due on Friday.  Supreme Court Case binders will be checked next week during Benchmark week for their binder test grade.  Students will need to have all 15 court cases for full credit.
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 8 Section 2 on page 220  of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this section. As the class finishes discussion for section 2, a worksheet will be given on Chapter 8: Revolt of the Rednecks, true and false. Students will read Chapter 8 Section 2 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading for this section if it was not completed in class today. Students will also complete the true false worksheet that was given in class today for homework if not completed in class. Chapter 8 vocabulary is due tomorrow!! Students will turn in their final Supreme Court Case of the nine weeks, Case #15 on Friday. SCC Binders will be checked next week during Benchmark Week. Students also need to be working on their Amendment Project that is due next Wednesday, Dec 13th. Students will also be given their Chapter 8 study guide today to begin working on. Students will be given a study guide to work independently through sections 1-3 of chapter 8. Students will answer each question by reading and studying throughout the chapter. Students will need to read Chapter 8 to be familiar with all terminology of the chapter for an open book test tomorrow. Students will also be given extra credit for completing their study guide for the test. Students need to complete their study guide and prepare for a Chapter 8 test tomorrow. Study study study!!! Supreme Court Case #15 is also due tomorrow. Students also need to be working on their Amendment Project that is due next Wednesday. 
Friday: Students will conclude Chapter 8 today with a chapter test. Students will take a test on Chapter 8: Revolt of the Rednecks that will be an open book test.  Students will be allowed to use their textbook and their textbooks only on the test! After completing the Chapter 8 test students will use this time to work on their Amendment Projects that are due next Wednesday, Dec 13th. Students will also turn in their last Supreme Court Case of the nine weeks today, Case #15. Supreme Court Binders will be checked next week during Benchmark week for their binder test grade. Students also need to be reminded that they will be allowed to recite the Gettysburg Address next week on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday to receive 30 points added to any test grade. Week 6, 2nd Nine Weeks

I hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving Break!  This week we will be back to work finishing up Chapter 7 with a test on Friday and beginning Chapter 8: Revolt of the Rednecks. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 7, Section 3. Discussion will begin on Section 3 on page 203 of the textbook and a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will also be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this section of the chapter. Students will also be given a worksheet to complete in class, a vocabulary review worksheet. Students need to complete the Guided Reading for Section 3 if it was not finished in class, as well as the vocabulary review worksheet. Students also need to have Supreme Court Case #14 ready to turn in Friday.
Tuesday: Today students will draw a political cartoon in class that pertains to the Civil War, how the Civil War affected the state of MS, how these long term effects were felt, or what Reconstruction might have looked like for the state of Mississippi at that time.  Cartoons should have a use of symbolism in them, be titled, have a phrase or some type of wording (this may come from a picture on the wall, something else written somewhere in the cartoon, be spoken words coming from a person in the picture, etc. Cartoons should be colorful and detailed. Questions to consider when coming up with a cartoon:
  1. What will the cartoon be about?
  2. Who are the main people involved in the event?
  3. How will you symbolize the groups or people involved to make them recognizable?
  4. What words or phrases will you use to communicate the message?
  5. What side of the event are you on?
Students will also be given a chapter 7 study guide to complete when they finish their political cartoon. Students will need to complete their political cartoons for homework tonight if they were not finished in class today. Students also need to work on their study guide for Chapter 7. It is due on Friday, the same day as the Chapter 7 test. Supreme Court Case #14 is due on Friday!
Wednesday: Today students will complete the Understanding the Facts questions 1-10 on page 209 in the textbook and turn them in for a grade, as well as the Developing Critical Thinking questions 1-2. Students will write the questions and answers in sentence form. After completing the questions and turning them in students will work on their Chapter 7 study guide. Students will need to work on their study guide for Chapter 7 to prepare for the test on Friday. Students also need to have their Supreme Court Case 14 ready to turn in Friday.
Thursday: Students will be given the entire class period today to work on their Chapter 7 study guide. We will not go over the study guides this week for the test because the test tomorrow will be an open book test! Students will work independently through chapter 7, sections 1-3 to complete the study guide and answer the questions for each section. Students will need to read Chapter to 7 to prepare for a chapter test tomorrow. Students will need to study for the Chapter 7 test tomorrow and have their Supreme Court Case #14 ready to turn in on Friday. 
Friday: Students will conclude Chapter 7 today with a chapter test. Students will take a test on Chapter 7: The Bourbon Era that will be an open book test.  Students will be allowed to use their textbook and their textbooks only on the test! After completing the Chapter 7 test students will be given a vocabulary list for Chapter 8 to begin defining.  Vocab will be due next Wednesday, Dec 6th. After the test is completed, students will take a closer look at the Gettysburg Address. What was it? Why was it given?  What did it mean? Students will receive a copy of the Gettysburg address to read and analyze today in class.  For extra credit, the students may memorize the Gettysburg address to earn an extra 30 bonus points that will be added to any test. Students will be given two full weeks to learn this. Students may recite the Gettysburg Address any time from Monday December 11th, 12th, and 13th. Students need to be working on the Chapter 8 vocabulary that is due next Wednesday.

Week 5, 2nd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be starting Chapter 7: The Bourbon Era, looking at what it was like in post Civil War Mississippi. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will spend today focusing on the role that Mississippi played in the Civil War and the soldiers that came from this state. The class will go to the website https://www.militaryimagesmagazine-digital.com/2022/06/06/mississippi-faces-portraits-from-the-matthew-l-oswalt-m-d-collection/ and look at several different variations of soldiers, taking note of their ages, backgrounds, attire, and stories. Students will then be given the article, Mississippi Soldiers in the Civil War, to read in class. They may find this article at https://www.mshistorynow.mdah.ms.gov/issue/mississippi-soldiers-in-the-civil-war#:~:text=Around%2080%2C000%20White%20men%20from,freedmen%20fought%20for%20the%20Union. Students will highlight the most important sections of the article taking note of main ideas and supporting details within the reading. Students will also be given several examples of diaries and letters written from Confederate soldiers to friends and family. Students will then create a work of historical fiction using specific details from the diaries and letters in the Mississippi History Now article. This will be a short story, an illustrated children's storybook with a title page for the front. Students must present 5 paragraphs regardless of what they choose to present.  Their work must have complete sentences with complete paragraphs and proper capitalization and punctuation. This work will be due on Friday. This will be a TEST grade!  Students are encouraged to be creative and use their sources for inspiration. Students need to continue to work on their historical fiction writing (children's story of a soldier from Mississippi) that is due on Friday for a TEST grade.
They will also have Supreme Court Case #13 due Friday.
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 7: the Bourbon Era, 1876-1900. Discussion will begin on Section 1 on page 188 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will also be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this section of the chapter. After completing the guided reading students will also be given a worksheet to complete, a reading comprehension sheet with 10 true/false questions.  Students need to complete the Guided Reading for Section 1 if it was not finished in class. Students will also need to complete the Reading Comprehension worksheet that was given in class today if it was not completed. They will also have Supreme Court Case #13 due Friday, as well as their historical fiction work. 
Wednesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 7, Section 2. Discussion will begin on Section 2 on page 198 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will also be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this section of the chapter. Students will also be given a fill in the blank worksheet to complete with 10 fill in the blank questions.  If this paper is not completed in class, students will complete it for homework. Students need to complete the Guided Reading for Section 2 if it was not finished in class, as well as the fill in the blank worksheet. Students also need to have their Supreme Court Case ready to turn in Friday and be continuously working on their historical fiction writing that is also due on Friday.
Thursday: Students will use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the four constitutions of Mississippi and explain the reasons for their development. For this purpose, four circles must be included in the students diagram and include the original Constitution of 1817, the Constitution of 1832, the Constitution of 1868, and the present day Constitution of 1890. If the students finish their Venn diagram, they may work on their Supreme Court Case or their historical fiction writing that is due tomorrow. Students will need to finish the Venn diagram that was assigned in class today if it was not completed. Students will turn in their historical fiction writings tomorrow, as well as their Supreme Court Case #13 for this week. 
Friday: Today is the official turn in day for their historical fiction writings.  All students will turn in a paper today. This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 6 on the Civil War and Reconstruction periods with a chapter test on Thursday and begin Chapter 7: The Bourbon Era on Friday. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Students will begin to prepare today for a Chapter test on Chapter 6: The Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1876 that will be given on Thursday. Students will be given a worksheet on civil war battlefields in Mississippi to complete in class for classwork. Students will then be given a study guide today to complete for review of Chapter 6 materials to prepare for a test on Thursday. Students will work independently through chapter 6, sections 1-3 to complete the study guide and answer the questions for each section. Students will have a vocabulary test tomorrow on List 1 and 2 for Chapter 6. Study for your vocab test!! Students will need to work on the study guide that was given in class to have it completed for studying purposes. Supreme Court Case #12 is due on Friday!!
Tuesday: Students will take a vocabulary test today on Chapter 6 words from List 1 and List 2. These lists combine words from Chapter 4, 5, and 6 to show the progression of how Mississippi grew from being the most wealthy state in the country to the poorest, and the effects of slavery and the Civil War to our state. As the students complete their vocabulary test, they will continue to work on the study guide for Chapter 6, using their text book to look through section 1-3 to complete the packet. Students need to complete their study guide for homework tonight. Students will also have Supreme Court Case 12 due this Friday, Nov 7th.
Wednesday: Students will be given the entire class period today to work on their study guide for Chapter 6, independently going through each section of the chapter to complete the study guide. If the students complete their study guide, they may use the remainder of the class time to work on their Supreme Court Case, #12, which is due Friday. Study, study, study!!  Chapter 6 test tomorrow!! Students will need to read Chapter 6 in the textbook and study for a  Chapter 6 test. Students also need to have their Supreme Court Case #12 ready to turn in Friday. 
Thursday: Students will take a test on Chapter 6: The Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1876. After the completion of the test, students will be given a list of vocabulary for Chapter 7.  These words will be due next Friday, Nov 17th. Students need to be working on their Chapter 7 vocabulary that is due next Friday. Supreme Court Case #12 is due tomorrow!!
Friday: Students will be given today to work on the list of vocabulary and important terms for the upcoming Chapter 7. Vocabulary is due next Friday, but since it is a lengthy list, students will be given the entire class period today to work on them.  Students may also use this day to make up any work from the nine weeks and turn in, including Supreme Court Cases. Supreme Court cases are due every Friday.

Week 3, 2nd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin covering Chapter 6: Civil War and Reconstruction, one of the most interesting times in History for the United States.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Students will begin today with a set of worksheets that will conclude Chapter 5, the succession of Mississippi from the Union, and lead into Chapter 6 where we will talk in detail about the events of the Civil War. Worksheet 1 is entitled The 1850’s: Crisis and Compromise. Worksheet 2, American Sectionalism & The Path to War, will again show some of the same Compromises and laws that came to be during this time, but also ask how it increased sectionalism between the North and South. Worksheet 3, The Road to Civil War, will give the students a list of dates that will need to be matched with the event that took place, what happened, and how it led to the war. Students will need to have all 3 worksheets from class completed and turned in for homework tomorrow. Students will also have Supreme Court Case 11 due this Friday. Students also need to be working on the vocab List 1 that is due tomorrow.
Tuesday: Students will begin Chapter 6: Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1876  today starting with Section 1 on page 156 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will need to read Chapter 6, Section 1 of the textbook and complete the Chapter Summary given in class today if it was not completed in class. Students will also receive Chapter 6 Vocabulary List 2 today.  This vocab list is due on Friday.  Students will have a vocabulary test next Tuesday on LIST 1 and LIST 2!!!!  Students will also have Supreme Court Case 11 due this Friday, Nov 3rd. 
Wednesday: Students will be given a worksheet to complete in class today on famous union and confederate generals in Mississippi, Students will be allowed to use the remainder of the class period today to work on the Chapter 6 Vocab List 2 that is due on Friday. Students also need to be reminded that they will have a test on both lists of words on Tuesday of next week!!!! Students may also use this time to work on their Supreme Court case #11 that is due on Friday as well. This is a working class period!! Students need to complete the vocab that is due on Friday. Don't forget about the Supreme Court Case #11 on Friday!!  
Thursday: Students will cover Chapter 6 Section 2 today starting on page 160 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will also be given a worksheet to complete for homework, Differences between the Northern and Southern States. Students will need to read Chapter 6, Section 2 of the textbook and complete the Chapter Summary given in class today if it was not completed in class, as well as the worksheet, Differences between the Northern and Southern States. Students also need to have their Supreme Court Cases #11 ready to turn in tomorrow.  Chapter 6 List 2 Vocabulary is due tomorrow also. 
Friday: Students will cover Chapter 6 Section 3 today starting on page 170 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will need to read Chapter 6, Section 2 of the textbook and complete the Chapter Summary given in class today if it was not completed in class. Students will also need to be preparing for the Chapter 6 Vocabulary test that will be given on Tuesday of next week.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 5: Antebellum Mississippi and preparing for a test on Friday. Students will begin Chapter 6: Civil War and Reconstruction on Friday. Homework and assignments for this week are as follows: 
Monday:  Students will be given a study guide today to complete for review of Chapter 5 materials to prepare for a test on Friday. Students will work independently through Chapter 5, Sections 1-3 to complete the study guide and answer the questions for each section. Students will need to begin reading Chapter 5 to prepare for the Chapter 5 test on Friday. Students are to complete the Chapter 5 study guide by Thursday to study for the test on Friday. Supreme Court Case #10 is due on Friday.
Tuesday: Students will watch a short video at https://www.pbs.org/video/frontline-god-in-america-two-a-new-eden/ on religion in America during the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century that shows states rights came into effect and a closer look at the Second Great Awakening. After watching the video and having a short class discussion, students will spend the remainder of the class period working on their study guide for Chapter 5 to prepare for a Chapter 5 Test on Friday. Students should be continuously working on their study guide for the Chapter 5 test on Friday, as well as reading the chapter to prepare for the test. Students will also have Supreme Court Case 10 due this Friday, October 27th. 
Wednesday: Today students will write a response to the following prompts: 
  1. If the cause is a split in the Democratic Party over the slavery issue, what is the effect?
  2. If the effect is the secession of seven southern states, what is the cause?
  3. If the cause is rumors of a slave revolt in the Natchez area, what is the effect?
  4. If the effect is the establishment of Liberia for repatriated slaves, what is the cause?
  5. If you were a free black living in antebellum Mississippi, would you have accepted the Mississippi Colonization Society’s assistance to return to Africa? Write a letter to the society explaining your decision.
After completing the questions and letter above, students will continue to work on their study guide for Chapter 5 to prepare for the test that will be given on Friday. If the students did not finish the questions and letter assigned in class today, they will need to complete it for homework. Students will also need to complete the Chapter 5 study guide that is due tomorrow, and continue to work on their Supreme Court Cases 10 that is due on Friday.
Thursday: The class will review the study guide today orally to ensure that each student has the correct answers in order to study and do well on the test. If there is time left after the review, students may use the remainder of the class time to work on their Supreme Court Case, which is due Friday, Case 10. Study, study, study!!  Chapter 5 test tomorrow!! Students need to complete reading Chapter 5 to prepare for the Chapter test! Study study study!!!!!!  Supreme Court Case #10 is due on Friday.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin Chapter 5: Antebellum Mississippi where we will look at pre–Civil War Mississippi and how the state was flourishing due to the cotton production. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Students will begin discussing Chapter 5: Antebellum Mississippi today. Discussion will begin on page 126 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section will be covered orally in class. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this chapter. After the class discussion for Section 1, students will be given a vocabulary list for Chapter 5. This vocabulary list should be defined using the textbook and Chapter 5 only. Using google will NOT give the meaning that is intended for these terms as they are used in Chapter 5. Vocabulary will be due on Monday, Oct 23rd! Students will need to read Chapter 5, Section 1 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading given in class today if it was not completed in class. Students also need to be working on the vocabulary worksheet to define the words listed there. Vocabulary is due next Monday. Supreme Court Case #9 will be due on Friday.
Tuesday: Students will continue discussing Chapter 5: Antebellum Mississippi today with section 2. Discussion will begin on page 134 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section will be covered orally in class. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this chapter. Students will be given a worksheet to complete in class after the completion of Chapter 5, Section 2 called Short Answer.  Students are to answer the questions using complete sentences from the chapter. Students will need to read Chapter 5, Section 2 of the textbook and complete the Chapter Summary that was given in class today if it was not completed then. Students will also need to complete the Short Answer worksheet from class today for homework if it was not complete in class.  Also, students should be continuously working on the vocabulary that is due on Monday! Wednesday: Students will begin today with a short review of material learned in sections 1 and 2 of chapter 5. Prompt for a thinking question: Students are to look at page 136 of the textbook.  If the cause is a rapid expansion of cotton fields in the 1830’s, what is the effect?  Next, students will explore the living conditions of slaves by exploring the Eustatia (Mississippi) cotton plantation account book found at the website www.pbs.org/wnet/slavery/experience/living/feature.html. Students will write down 10 facts they learned about the daily life of slaves from this primary source. Students will then visit the website http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/pds/maai/enslavement/text3/plantationhughes.pdf. Students will write a 1 paragraph description of the construction, furnishings, and layout of the slave cabin as Hughes described it. Students will need to complete the Understanding the Facts questions 1-10 located on page 151. Students are to write QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!! Vocabulary is also due on Monday!! Students will need to complete the 10 facts gathered from exploring the slave journal today in class and their 1 paragraph description of the construction, furnishings, and layout of the slave cabin as described by Hughes. Supreme Court Case #9 is due on Friday.
Thursday: Students will cover Section 3 of Chapter 5 today starting on page 144 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for this section of the chapter. Students will turn to page 148 in their textbook. Students will analyze the map of the presidential candidates and the amount of electoral votes each candidate received. How many electoral votes are there now? How many were there then? How many did each candidate win? Who was the winner? Now divide the electoral votes won by each candidate by the total number of electoral votes to determine the percentage of the nation that was won by each candidate. Students will write these questions on a sheet of paper to answer and turn in. Students will also have a vocabulary review worksheet to complete in class or for homework. Students will need to read Chapter 5, Section 3 of the textbook and complete the Chapter Summary given in class today if it was not completed in class. Students also need to finish answering the questions and analysis of the electoral votes on page 148 and complete the vocabulary review worksheet. Vocabulary is due on Monday and Supreme Court Case #9 is due tomorrow. 
Friday: Students will be given a study guide today to complete for review of Chapter 5 materials to prepare for a test on Wednesday. Students will work independently through Chapter 5, Sections 1-3 to complete the study guide and answer the questions for each section. Students will need to begin reading Chapter 5 to prepare for the Chapter 5 test on Wednesday. Students are to complete the Chapter 5 study guide by Tuesday to study for the test on Wednesday. This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up the Nine Weeks with Benchmark Testing this week, as well as Nine Weeks Projects for classes that are not benchmark tested.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will work independently today to complete all components of the Build Your Own Country Project that was assigned last week as the Nine Weeks Test Project. Students will be working on their Nine Weeks Project all week to ensure they have all components completed and ready to turn in on Friday, Oct. 6th. 
Tuesday: Students will be taking their Benchmark ELA Test Today. If our class meets, students will continue to work on their Build Your Own Country Project that is due on Friday.
Wednesday: Students will be taking their Benchmark Math Test today. If our class meets, students will continue to work on their Build Your Own Country Project that is due on Friday.
Thursday: Students will be taking their Benchmark Science Test today. If our class meets, students will continue to work on their Build Your Own Country Project that is due on Friday.
Friday: Students will turn in their Build Your Own Country Projects today. They will also present their Supreme Court Case Binders today for their final test grade of the nine weeks.

Week 8, 1st Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 4: From Territory to Statehood, 1798-1860 with a chapter test on Friday and start planning and looking at our Nine Weeks Project that is due next week during Benchmark Testing Week.
 
Monday: Today students will be given their Nine Weeks Test Project, Build Their Own Country.  We will go over the directions together so there are no questions about how to do the project. This project will be due next Friday, October 6th. Students will be given a worksheet to review several of the compromises that were put into place before the Civil War called Short Term Compromises Before the Civil War. Students will then be given another worksheet called Three Compromises, that will continue to review these attempts to prevent war. Students will answer the questions asked about the Missouri Compromise, The Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas Nebraska Act. Students will then be given a worksheet to complete, the Election of 1860 Political Cartoon Web Quest Activity. Students will also be given 6 political cartoons to gather information about. Students must complete the worksheet, telling the title of the cartoon, target audience, purpose or message, and whether or not they feel the cartoon was effective and why or why not. Students will need to complete both of the worksheets given in class today regarding the review of Compromises that were simply postponing the Civil War. Students will also need to complete the political cartoon analysis sheet for the 6 cartoons about the 1860 Election that were given in class today. Supreme Court Case #8 is due on Friday.
 
Tuesday: Students will spend time today in class answering the Understanding the Facts questions on page 121. Students must write questions and answers. They will also do the Developing Critical Thinking question 1-3. Students will answer these questions with more critical answers and thinking. Students will write questions and answers and turn in at the end of the class period. After completing the Understanding the Facts and Developing Critical Thinking questions the students will be given a study guide for Chapter 4: From Territory to State to begin working on. This study guide will be due on Thursday for us to go over in class. Students will continue to work on their Chapter 4 study guide and prepare for a Chapter test on Friday. Study guides are due Thursday. Students also need to begin reading the chapter to prepare for this test. Supreme Court Case #8 will be due Friday as well.
 
Wednesday: Students will spend the class period today working independently on the Chapter 4 study guide that is due Thursday. Students will need to read the chapter to complete the packet, which will better prepare them for their test. Students are preparing for a chapter test on Friday. Students may also choose to use this time to work on their Nine Weeks Test Project, Build Your Own Country, as well. Students will continue to work on their Chapter 4 study guide and prepare for a Chapter test on Friday. Study guides are due Thursday. Students also need to begin reading the chapter to prepare for this test. Supreme Court Case #8 will be due Friday as well. Students also need to be working on their Nine Weeks Test Project that is due next Friday, Oct. 6th.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin working in Chapter 4: From Territory to Statehood, 1798-1860.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
 
Monday: Students will begin discussing Chapter 4: From Territory to Early Statehood, 1798 - 1860 today. Discussion will begin on Section 1 on page 94 of the textbook and a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section will be covered. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a worksheet to complete, The Role of Compromise, to discuss the short term and long-term effects of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850.  If this worksheet is not completed in class, it will need to be completed for homework. Students will read Chapter 4 Section 1 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading given in class today if it was not completed in class.  This also applies to the worksheet given, The Role of Compromises. Supreme Court Case #7 will also be due this Friday. Chapter 4 Vocabulary is due on Thursday!

Students will be given a worksheet to complete, John Brown’s Final Statement to the Court.  Students will read the statement and answer the questions that follow. Students need to complete the guided reading assigned in class today and also the worksheet, John Brown’s Final Statement to the Court if not completed in class. Supreme Court Case #7 will also be due this Friday. 
 
Wednesday: Students will have a short discussion on Aaron Burr and discuss what they thought about the conspiracy he was involved in? What was the importance of the letter written to General James Wilkinson? (read from textbook) The class will then read an account of The Treason Trial of Aaron Burr together and discuss the conspiracy, the trial, and the aftermath. Students will then be given a worksheet to complete on what was read in class. Students will also be given a copy of the reading to complete the questions for homework if not finished in class.  Students may google some of the answers to the questions if they cannot find them in the reading. Students may need to reread the account of the Burr conspiracy and trial to complete the questions on the worksheet. Chapter 4 vocabulary is due tomorrow as well. Complete the short answer questions on the worksheet about Aaron Burr and the conspiracy surrounding them. Supreme Court Case #7 will also be due this Friday.

Students will be prepared to answer questions about Chapter 4 Section 3 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. Students will be given a vocabulary review worksheet to complete in class. If this worksheet is not completed in class, it must be completed for homework. Students will read Chapter 4 Section 3 of the textbook and complete the Guided Reading given in class today if it was not completed in class.  This also applies to the worksheet given, the vocabulary review worksheet.

Supreme Court Case #7 is due tomorrow!!

Friday: Students will be introduced to an activity on the Dredd Scott case. The students will have a discussion on the feelings they would have if they were treated a certain way just because they were owned. The teacher will read a short biography of Dredd Scott and the class will discuss what life was like for these slaves. Then the class will read the Dred Scott Decision delivered by Chief Justice Taney (handout) and discuss the outcome. Is it fair? Was it unfair? Why do you think that? Students will write 2 editorials in response to the Dred Scott decision: one from a post-slavery Southern perspective, and the other from an anit-slavery abolitionist Northern perspective. Make sure the students entitle their editorials with headlines phrased similar to how newspaper articles are titled. Information should be accurate. Editorials should include headlines and state a position. Students will answer the 6 questions following the Dred Scott decision for homework.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be concluding Chapter 3: The European Period, 1540-1798 with a final test on Friday.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Students will be given a study guide today to prepare them for a chapter test on Chapter 3: The European Period on Friday. Study guides will be due on Thursday. Students will work independently as they travel through Chapter 3, Sections 1 - 4 to complete each section of the study guide. Study guide will be due on Thursday.  Students will continue to work on their study guides for homework tonight and throughout the week to prepare for the Chapter 3 test on Friday. Supreme Court Case #6 is due on Friday as well.
Tuesday: Students will watch a short video recapping the Revolutionary War, entitled the Revolutionary War: Animated Battle Map. This video will bring in a little U.S. history for the students as well as Mississippi. Students will continue to prepare today for a chapter test on Chapter 3 that will be given on Friday, Sept. 16th. Students will continue to work on the study guide today that covers Chapter 3, Sections 1-4. Students need to continue reading to prepare for a chapter test on Friday! The best way to prepare for a chapter test is by reading the chapter. Students need to complete the study guide given in class yesterday. Supreme Court Case #6 is also due on Friday.
Wednesday: Students will spend a few minutes today looking at events that led to the Revolutionary war.  These events put into motion the United States becoming an independent nation and being self sustaining. The students will be given 2 articles to read today: The Stamp Act Controversy and the Townshend Acts. Students will read these articles together aloud with the class (popcorn read). Then the students will watch a short video on the Boston Tea Party at Boston Massacre - YouTube. Students will then read a short article on Paul Revere and the Boston Massacre. After looking at the previous sources and videos and talking about events that took place, the students will be given time to work on their chapter 3 study guide that is due on Thursday. Supreme Court Case #6 is due on Friday. Students will also need to complete the study guide for Chapter 3. We will go over study guides orally in class tomorrow to ensure that all students have the correct answers to study for the Chapter 3 test.

This week in Mississippi Studies the students will be continuing to work in Chapter 3: European Explorers.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: No school!  Happy Labor Day!!
Tuesday: The students will cover Chapter 3 Section 3 today with a powerpoint presentation on Under British Rule, 1763-1783  that highlights the important terms and points within that section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be given a short article to read, “First Encounters in the Americas.” After reading the article, students will answer the 5 connection questions, making sure they cite their evidence and answers from within the article. Please use complete sentences for your answers. Students will answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper and staple it to the article to turn in. Students will need to finish the Guided Reading that was assigned in class today, along with the First Encounters article and questions that were given out. Supreme Court Case #5 is due Friday.
Wednesday: Students will read the passage located on pages 86 and 87 in their textbook about Natchez: The Wickedest Waterfront on the Mississippi. Students will read aloud and discuss orally. Students will then do individual research to find 2 current articles (written in the last 10 years) about the town of Natchez and the concerns that the town may be haunted.  Students will then choose one article to write a one page article review on, including a personal reflection paragraph.  A rubric for the article review will be provided. If this one page summary is not completed in class, students will complete it for homework. Supreme Court Case #5 is due on Friday! If the article summary was not completed in class today, students will need to complete it for homework. 
Thursday: The students will cover Chapter 3 Section 4 today with a powerpoint presentation on A Spanish Province, 1783-1798  that highlights the important terms and points within that section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  After the students complete the section lecture and their guided reading for section 4, they will complete the Understanding the Facts questions 1-10 located on page 89 of the textbook. Students must write questions and answers in sentence form. Supreme Court Case #5 is due tomorrow. Students will need to finish the Guided Reading that was assigned in class today, along with the Understanding the Facts questions located on page 89 in the textbook.  
Friday: Students will spend a few minutes reviewing political cartoons and the process of analyzing to interpret the meaning hidden within each cartoon.  Students will be shown an actual newspaper with a political cartoon and will participate in a class discussion to decipher the meaning. Students will be given a political cartoon to analyze and interpret the meaning of independently.  Students must complete the worksheet that accompanies the cartoon to recognize the symbols and techniques used by the author to convey his message. 

Students will then be given a Cause and Effect Chart to complete on European Exploration by determining which columns each phrase should be placed in. Students may use their textbooks or even google to help determine which column each belongs in. Students need to have the cartoon analysis and the cause and effect chart completed from class today.

Week 4, 1st Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 2: Native Mississippians with a chapter test, and beginning chapter 3: Early Explorers. Homework and assignments for the week are as follows: 
Monday: The students will be introduced to political cartoons and begin to understand how to interpret the meaning hidden within these cartoons as well as identify the 3 main parts of a political cartoon. The class will be shown 4 examples of political cartoons to analyze and interpret the meaning as a class. Students will analyze cartoons on the board and we will fill out the graphic organizer together for students to understand the process of deciphering the underlying meaning for each one. Students will be given a political cartoon entitled “Nast on Native Americans” to answer questions on and interpret the true meaning of. If this paper is not completed in class, students will complete for homework. Students will complete the Nast on Natives political cartoon for homework if it was not completed in class today. Chapter 2 study guides are due tomorrow!!  Supreme Court Case #4 is due on Friday. 
Tuesday: The class will review the study guide today orally to ensure that each student has the correct answers in order to study and do well on the test. If there is time left after the review, students may use the remainder of the class time to work on their Supreme Court Case #4 that is due on Friday. Supreme Court Case #4 is due on Friday, Sept 1st. Students need to study and prepare for a Chapter 2 test tomorrow.
Wednesday: Students will conclude Chapter 2 on Native Mississippians today with a chapter test and begin Chapter 3 with an in depth vocabulary set to jumpstart the material in this chapter. Students will take a test on Chapter 2: Native Mississippians. Students will be given a vocabulary list for Chapter 3:The European Period, 1540 - 1798. Students are to define, identify, and list important aspects such as dates, places, or people for each particular term.  Vocabulary will be due on Monday. Supreme Court Case #4 is due Friday. Students will need to complete the vocabulary that were given in class today by Monday.
Thursday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 3:  Section 1. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be given a worksheet to complete on Spanish and French explorers. If this worksheet is not completed in class, it will be completed for homework. Students will need to finish the Guided Reading that was assigned in class today, along with the Explorer worksheet that was given out. Supreme Court Case #4 is due tomorrow and the chapter 3 vocabulary is due on Monday!
Friday: The students will cover Chapter 3 Section 2 today with a PowerPoint presentation on French Exploration and the Louisiana Province, 1673-1763 that highlights the important terms and points within that section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a vocabulary matching worksheet to complete for a review of terms and important phrases in the chapter. Students need to complete the guided reading assigned in class today and also the vocab review worksheets if they were not completed in class today. Chapter 3 vocabulary is due on Monday.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be continuing to cover Chapter 2: Native Mississippians.  By the end of the week we will have come to an end and students will receive a study guide to prepare them for a chapter test next week. Homework and assignments are as follows:
 
Monday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 2: Native Mississippians, Section 2: Major Tribes: Natchez, Choctaw, Chickasaw. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a worksheet, Chapter 2: Native Mississippians Using Reading Skills: Interpreting, to complete. Students need to continue to work on the Chapter 2 vocabulary that is due on Thursday, Aug 24th, Supreme Court Case #3, and the Hurricane Project that is due by Friday Aug 25th. Students will need to complete the work sheet given in class today for homework, Chapter 2: Native Mississippians Using Reading Skills: Interpreting, if it was not completed in class today, as well as the guided reading for section 2.
 
Tuesday: Students will continue to work on Chapter 2 today, looking more in depth at the Trail of Tears and how it affected the MS Indians. Students will be given an article to read today, The Trail of Tears.  Students will read this article aloud in class, discussing as the students take turns reading. Students will then write a one page summary on the article and the impact that is had on the people affected by this tragic event. When the students complete the summary, they will use the remainder of the class period to work on their chapter 2 vocabulary that is due on Thursday, Hurricane Project that is due on Friday, or Supreme Court Case #3 that is due on Friday. Students need to be continuously working on the Hurricane Project that is due next Friday. Supreme Court Case #3 is due on Friday also. If students did not finish the summary in class today they will need to finish it for homework.  They also need to be working on the Chapter 2 vocabulary that is due on Thursday.
 
Wednesday: The class will go through a power point presentation (slides 43-49) for Chapter 2: Native Mississippians, Section 3: Small Tribes that highlights the important terms and points within that section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will have a vocabulary review worksheet to complete in class.  If it is not completed in class, it must be completed for homework. Students need to be continuously working on the Hurricane Project that is due this Friday, August 25th. Students will need to complete the guided reading and the vocab review worksheet that was given in class today for homework if they were not completed in class. Chapter 2 vocab is also due tomorrow and Supreme Court Case #3 is due on Friday.  
 
Thursday: The class will go through a power point presentation (slides 50-60) for Chapter 2: Native Mississippians, Section 4:Indian Removal and the Trail of Tears that highlights the important terms and points within that section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 2, Section 4 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. In class today, students will be given the Reading Assignment of Samuel’s Memory (primary source 1). Students are to read the passage and answer the questions that follow. (8 questions) Hurricane Projects are due tomorrow!!!  Supreme Court Case #5 is also due tomorrow. The students will read the 4 additional primary sources included in the Reading Assignment given in class today. They will choose one of the 3 options to complete and turn in.  Students will also need to make sure their guided reading for section 4 is completed.
 
Friday: Students will receive a Chapter 2 study guide for sections 1-4 to work in class using the chapter and notes to find answers for the questions. Study guides will be due on Tuesday when we will go over in class to review for the Chapter 2 test on Wednesday. Begin preparing for the chapter test next Wednesday, Aug 30th.

Monday: Students will be given a study guide for Chapter 1: The Geography of Mississippi to complete to prepare for the chapter test on Wednesday. Students will need to begin preparing for the chapter test by reviewing vocabulary, notes, and reading the chapter to understand knowledge from the chapter. Students need to be continuously working on the Hurricane Project that is due next Friday, Aug 25th. Students also need to complete the Study Guide for chapter 1 for homework tonight if it was not completed in class today.  Students will also have Supreme Court Case #2 due Friday, Aug 18th. 
Tuesday: The class will review the study guide today orally to ensure that each student has the correct answers in order to study and do well on the test. Students need to be continuously working on the Hurricane Project that is due on next Friday, August 25th. Students will work on Chapter 2 Vocabulary.  This vocabulary will be due on Thursday, August 24th.  Students will also have Supreme Court Case #2 due Friday, Aug 18th. 
Thursday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 2: Native Mississippians,  Section 1: A Pristine Wilderness. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a set of worksheets to complete with 4 stations.  Students will complete each station to complete the worksheets. Students need to be continuously working on the Hurricane Project that is due on next Friday, August 25th. Students also need to complete the 4 Stations worksheet given in class today for homework if it was not completed in class.  Students may also be working on the vocabulary for Chapter 2 that is due next Thursday.   Students will also have Supreme Court Case #2 due tomorrow.

Welcome back to school everyone!!  This will be our first week of learning since last week was a short week with Thursday and Friday being starter days.  This week we will dig in and start work.  We will begin with Chapter 1 and go from there.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Today students will begin by discussing Chapter 1: The Geography of Mississippi, Section 1: Where in the World is Mississippi? Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a list of vocabulary to define for Chapter 1.  Students should list important details, identify, and define the important terms.  Vocabulary will be due on Friday. Students are to complete the Guided Reading given in class today for section 1 if it was not completed in class, as well as continuously be working on the vocabulary list that is due on Friday. Students will also have their first Supreme Court Case due this Friday, Marbury vs. Madison. 
Tuesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 1: The Geography of Mississippi, Section 2: Fair Weather. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a blank map of the state of Mississippi with directions for the students to follow. Students will label reservoirs, draw and label a compass rose, star the capital, and various other important details with the states. Students are to complete the Guided Reading given in class today for section 2 if it was not completed in class, as well as continuously be working on the vocabulary list that is due on Friday. Students must also complete the worksheet map that was given in class today if not completed. Students also have Supreme Court Case #1 due Friday.
Wednesday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 1: The Geography of Mississippi, Section 3: Fertile Soil. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a worksheet to complete: Using Geography Skills, Mississippi in the United States. Students are to complete the Guided Reading given in class today for section 3 if it was not completed in class, as well as continuously be working on the vocabulary list that is due on Friday. Students must also complete the worksheet that was given in class today if not completed. Students also have Supreme Court Case #1 due Friday.
Thursday: Students will continue to work today in Chapter 1 on the geography of Mississippi. Students will be assigned a Hurricane Project that will compare and contrast the two most devastating storms to affect the state of MS, Hurricane Camille and Hurricane Katrina. Students must compose a 14-slide presentation using Google Slides or PowerPoint to present the information.  This project will be due on Friday, August 25th, 2023. Students will spend the day today working on their Chapter 1 vocabulary that is due tomorrow, their first Supreme Court Case that is due tomorrow, or if they have completed all of those, they may begin working on their Hurricane Project. Students will need to get a jump start on their Hurricane Project.  Go ahead and get started!  This project is due Friday, August 25th.  Students need to complete the Chapter 1 vocabulary that is due tomorrow and also their 1st Supreme Court Case that is due tomorrow. 
Friday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 1: The Geography of Mississippi, Section 4:  Natural Resources. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter. Students will be given a worksheet to complete, a vocabulary review to help review important terms for a chapter test next Wednesday.  Students need to be continuously working on their Hurricane Project.  This project is due Friday, August 25th. Students will need to complete the guided reading that was given today if it was not completed as classwork, as well as the worksheet, a review of vocabulary terms, if it was not completed in class today.
