Welcome to 6th grade ELA/History

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are going to have a great year.   It is my pleasure to welcome your students to 6th grade. I believe that all students can learn and I look forward to the opportunity to serve our students.   All students will write a variety of paragraphs, complete projects, book assignments, use various apps, and read chapter books.  During the year, our children will be required to read grade appropriate A.R. books and take A.R. test.  They may read on Epic or hard copies from the library. Students must bring hard copies to class to read when they are finished with assignments and in the morning before class begins. Students should read 30 minutes each day, even on weekends to promote growth in all areas of reading.  Students will have written homework Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  On Wednesday, they only need to read for 30 minutes. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Classroom rules and Procedures

  1. Be on time, seated and ready to work when the tardy bell rings.

  1. Bring all materials needed to class (books, pencil, and paper).

  1. Talk only when recognized by the teacher.

  1. Do not use profanity, cheat, steal or lie.

  1. Do not chew gum or eat in class.

  1. Keep hands, feet, and objects to oneself.

  1. Respect school property.

  1. Be respectful to teachers.

  1. Listen and follow directions the first time given.

  1. Turn in all classwork and homework before leaving class.  Classwork taken out of class without permission will result in a zero.

Progressive Consequences:

  1. Nonverbal Reminder-Eye Contact, proximity, or hand signal to redirect the student without interrupting instruction.

  1. Verbal Warning-Private reminder (one-on-one) of the classroom expectation and an opportunity for students to correct the behavior.

  1. Reflection or Seat Change-The student moves to a different seat and should write a 1 paragraph reflection on how they will change or correct behavior. (It may be on how to make better choices.)

  1. Contact Parent or Guardian-Phone call on school status to parent or guardian communicating the concern and ways to correct the behavior.

  1. Office Referral -Used for repeated minor infractions after classroom interventions have been exhausted or for serious behaviors that violate school policy.

Entering the classroom

Students will enter the classroom on time, quietly read the board as they store bookbags, sharpen pencils, etc.  Follow board directions like turn in your homework, having all materials needed for class, and completing bellringers or assignments.

Bellringer

Bellringers will be on the board everyday when students arrive to class, read the board, complete the assignment.  The bellringer grades will be an average of all bellringers for the week.

Binder

Students will need to bring their binder to school everyday. Binders will be checked periodically and students should not throw away any notes or instructional handouts.

Group work

While completing group work students will be asked to work effectively and efficiently while doing their part. Students who do not complete their assignments will receive a 0.

End of class

The teacher will dismiss the class and not the bell.  Tables and the floor will be left clean.  Assignments will be placed in the classwork basket as students exit the classroom.  If assignments are not completed students may come in and complete it during activity.

Turning in work

Each paper you hand in will be neat, and contain your first and last name, date, and period or block number. Papers with no name will be thrown away.

Students who are present but do not submit classwork will receive a zero for the assignment.

All homework needs to be turned into the homework basket the following day.

Students who lose a copy will have 5 points deducted for new copies.

Absent/ Late Work

If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility for obtaining missed assignments and notes from the teacher or another student. (*This is in the Scott County Student Handbook)

Students may come in during their activity period to make up work.  Activity period is the period students attend band, P.E., or library.

It is the responsibility of the student to place all late work in the designated bin before class starts.

For every day a student is absent they will have a day to make up the missed assignments/notes.  Not to exceed 3 days from absence.

Late work will not be taken after 3 days. Deductions will be given each day the assignment is late.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!

ISS/OSS does not excuse a student from missing work.

Cell Phone/Electronics Device use in class

Cell Phones, smart watches, and wireless headphones or ear buds ARE NOT ALLOWED in my room. If I see it, I will take it up and turn it into the office. If I see the imprint of a device on your person it will be collected and turned in to the office. Parents will be notified.

GRADING SYSTEM

A standard numerical grading system is maintained in the SCSD. Grade frequencies are as follows:  A = 100-90 B = 89 - 80 C = 79- 70 D = 69 - 60 F = 59 – 0

Students will show academic integrity at all times. Any ideas/work that is handed in must be your own. This includes homework and assignments.

Any assignment that has been copied from another student will be counted as a zero in the gradebook and the parent/guardian will be notified.

Assignments must be handed in on time. Homework is accepted a maximum of 3 days late with the maximum grade earned being a 70. 10-Point deduction 1st day, 20-point deduction 2nd day, and 30-points on the 3rd day.  The Homework for the week will be averaged together and that one averaged grade will be entered.

Please sign and return if you have read over these classroom rules and procedures with your student. This will be entered as a 100 homework grade.  When this paper is submitted I will provide another copy to be kept in their binder and for your records.
