Week 7, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Cyber Foundations we will be continuing to work on our websites and learning new code to add to it every week. State tests will be given this week so some days may be mixed up with classes.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Today students will log into their Code.org website and begin on Lesson 9, Bubble 1. This is where we will begin to add images to our websites and learn the correct way to code these images. Students will take down vocabulary words today in their journals for Journal Entry #9: new code for image, attribute, src (source), self-closing tag, and alt (attribute). After completing the directions in bubble 1, students will move to Bubble #2 where they will add the word attribution to their vocabulary list also. Students will then continue to work through bubbles 4, 5, and 6 to work on adding photos correctly and correcting image names and code.
Tuesday: Students will work in Bubble 6 where they will complete bubbles A-F to practice more with images and adding pictures correctly.  Students will continue to work in bubbles 7 and 8 to complete all the assessments and challenges listed there. In Bubble 8 students will take out their journals and add the attributes for height and weight to their notes. They may add these two terms to their #9 journal. They will learn about height and weight distributions for images, how to make an illustrated story, and how to make a how- to guide.
Wednesday: Today students will log into code.org, Lesson 11, Bubble 1 where they will look at some of the sample websites listed on the page. Students will discuss some of the new and different styling techniques located on the pages. As the students continue to Lesson 11 bubble 2 they will take out their journals and complete Journal Entry #10. For this journal, students will take down the following vocabulary words: body selector, border style property, border radius property, and the float property. Students will then read the directions on this bubble and learn how to properly code and style web pages to show these effects. If time allows students will also do bubble 3.
Thursday: Today students will continue to work on the Code.org site where they will go to Lesson 11 Bubble 3 and continue to work on styling images. Students will work through Bubbles 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 where they will work bubbles a, b, c, d, e, and f. All of these bubbles deal with things that have been covered, therefore this should be a great review of the material.
Friday: Today will be a catch up day for students to make sure their websites are all completed up to the point of having all of the structure and style requirements for code and css. Students may also use this time to catch up on any missed homework or class assignments they may be missing.  If the students are all caught up with their websites and all homework and daily grades they may Nitrotype for the remainder of the class period.

Week 5, 4th Nine Weeks

I hope this week finds each of you safe and healthy as we were unexpectedly cut short last week by the bad weather. This week will be a continuation of last week to finish up a few things and continue to work on our personal webpages. Assignments and homework are as follows:

Monday: Students will continue working today on the Code.org website and work on a beginner coding unit. Students will be given 15 minutes to wrap up typing their websites with the beginning 3 requirements in Code.org. Students will then log into Code.org and go to Lesson 5, Bubble 1 where they will take a step back from students’ work developing web pages to help them articulate what personal information they choose to share digitally and with whom. It also reinforces the notion that much of the information that they choose to share digitally falls largely out of their control the moment it is released. Students will look at several social media pages to determine what sorts of information people are sharing about themselves or one another. Last, students reflect on what guidelines they think are appropriate for posting information online. The ultimate point of this lesson is not to scare students, but rather to experientially bring students to realize that they don’t have control over information released online. Students will complete Journal Entry #6 today and write a one paragraph reply to the following prompt: How can you make sure that your private information stays private? Students will also take down the vocabulary word digital footprint and the definition. Students will then be given a worksheet to complete using the example social media sites on the Code.org bubble 1.  If the students do not complete this worksheet in class they will complete it for homework.

Tuesday: Today students will take a few minutes to explore giving and following directions.  One student will be given a sheet of paper with a very specific picture on it and try to explain to another student what to draw to match the sheet of paper.  Students soon realize how important it is to be very specific with their instructions, such as when giving a computer instructions to make a website with code. Students will pick up today with Lesson 6, Bubble 1 and and look at some of the new styling techniques that we will use to make our websites more attractive and appealing to others. Students will then go to Lesson 6, Bubble 2 and look at how to change the style of a website with the style.css tab. On Bubble 3 students will watch a short video on the introduction of CSS. Students will then complete Journal Entry #7. Students will answer the prompt: How is the style of a web page different from the structure? Why might you want your web page to have a certain style? Students will answer the prompt with a one paragraph reply, as well as take down the definition for CSS and CSS selector. Students will be given worksheets to complete for homework, The Prince and the Pauper and Jabberwocky. \
