Vocab quiz Friday, April 18th!!
  1. Appeal - make a serious or urgent request, typically to the public.: "police are appealing for information about the incident" 
    1. be attractive or interesting. The longer days appealed to the excited children who like playing outside until dark. 
  2. Prejudice- preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.:  The Nazis were prejudice against people from different backgrounds
  3. Suspense-a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.: "come on, Fran, don't keep me in suspense!".
  4. Tone- tone is the author’s attitude toward the audience, the subject, or the character. Tone is conveyed through the author’s words and details.
  5. Mood-mood is the emotions the reader feels while reading a text. Mood is created by the author’s word choice, imagery, dialogue, setting, and plot. 
  6. Characterization- a description of the distinctive nature or features of someone or something.: "she rejected that characterization of her film".
  7. Demonstrate-clearly show the existence or truth of (something) by giving proof or evidence.: "their shameful silence demonstrates their guilt 
  8. Dramatic irony- When readers have information about a character or situation that some or all of the characters in the story do not know.
  9. Address- to speak to someone or speak about an issue. She addressed the issue of not doing bellwork when the bell rings
  10. Contribute- to add something to an idea, story, etc. The examples contributed to her understanding 
  11. Primary difference- The most noticeable difference. The primary difference between Apple and Android is the reliability of the product.
  12. Traditional- long-established or well known way of doing something. She wrote the story in a traditional fairy tale method
  13. Reinforce- To support an idea with additional evidence or information. The teacher reinforced the idea that spring break should be two weeks long, by showing evidence of higher test scores in other schools that have two week spring breaks.
  14. Refine- To make something more clear, sometimes by giving definitions, explanations, or examples. I refined the paragraph by adding two more examples
  15. Connection- A relationship between two or more things. The cause and effect connection of global warming and melting glaciers is common knowledge
  16. Reflect- (of an action or situation) bring credit or discredit to the relevant people. The parenting styles are reflected in the misbehaving children. 
  17. Establish- when something is achieved or accepted. In the first days of school, the teachers establish the rules. 
  18. Pose- give rise to, lead to, result in. The melting ice caps pose a danger to all of humanity. 
  19. Benefit-an advantage or profit gained from something. The dogs benefited from the law against chains.
  20. Protagonist-the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text. The protagonist in “The Diary of Anne Frank” is Anne Frank .
  21. Antagonist- The person or force that opposes the protagonist. The antagonist in “The Diary of Anne Frank” is the Nazi party. 
  22. Elaborate- To make something more clear by adding more information. The teacher elaborated on the importance of the test. 
Nostalgia- a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.: "I was overcome with nostalgia for my days in college".

Our ELA benchmark is March 5th. I am very excited for us to show what we have learned over the last three nine weeks. Please make sure they go to bed early, so they can perform their best. Thank y'all!

Students will need to read and annotate the article, "More Facebook Friends, Less Real Ones." Students have a hard copy of this assignment.  
Students will need to 1. Identify the central idea of the text.   2. Note important people, places, events, and numbers.   3. Identify the key concept of each paragraph. 4. Answer all discussion question accompanied with the text.
 
We will have a weekly binder check to ensure students keep up with important class work. All items must be in the binder and completed to receive a 100.
