Description
Mississippi is an 8th grade history class that at the present time is a required class for all students to gain graduation status.  The class is a two semester course designed to foster appreciation for the state, its history and its culture. The content will include the geographic, historic, economic, political, and social events that have contributed to the state‘s development.  This class is designed to teach students many interesting and helpful facts about our beautiful state.  The history is rich and intriguing and gives the students a very in-depth look at how our state came to be and how it prospers as it does today.

Week 9, 4th Nine Weeks

Monday: Today students will be given their 9 Weeks test project, a presentation on a famous Mississippian. Students will also be given back all Supreme Court Cases today for their final Supreme Court Binder check.  Students will also review for a final counties test on the southern portion of the Mississippi counties which will be given tomorrow. Chapter 16 guided reading will also be given today for the students to have completed by Thursday.

Tuesday: Students will take their final MS Counties test today on the southern counties. Students will also have their Supreme Court Binder check today for their final 9 weeks’ regular test grade.  After completing the counties test, students will continue to work on either their Famous Mississippian Project or the Ch. 16 guided reading. Chapter 16 vocabulary is also due today.

Wednesday: Students will use today to work on their Ch. 16 guided reading or the Famous Mississippian Project.

Thursday: Students will use today to work on their Ch. 16 guided reading or the Famous Mississippian Project.

Friday: Famous Mississippian projects are due today as well as the Ch. 16 guided reading. Awards Day is also today!!  Exempt students do not have to come back!

Week 8, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will spend some time watching the Deep Water Horizon movie and discussing the impact this tragedy had on our state. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will begin watching the Deepwater Horizon movie today which portrays the events of the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Students will discuss how the oil spill affected Mississippi and how long term effects are still being felt even today.  Students will also note how this tragedy affected many of the wildlife, water, and businesses that depended on summer or beach life.
Tuesday: Students will continue to watch the movie and discuss this tragedy and its affects on our state.

Students will take a Chapter 15: Mississippi’s Literary Tradition test today that will be open book. Students will be given a list of important vocabulary and terms for Chapter 16: Performing and Visual Artists and Sports Heroes to begin defining.  This vocab list will be due on Tuesday, May 17th.  Students will need to work on the vocab list that was given today for Chapter 16. This list will be due on Tuesday, May 17th.
Friday: There will be no assignments given today as the students will be out today on a field trip.

This week in Mississippi Studies students will be finishing up Chapter 14 with a unit test, and begin working on Chapter 15: Mississippi's Literary Tradition. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Students will take an open book test today on Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship. After the test, some students will be given the opportunity to share their 8th grade alphabet with the class if they would like to. If the students choose not to share their alphabets, they may begin to work on their Chapter 15 vocabulary.  Students will continue to work on the Chapter 15 vocabulary that was given today after the Chapter 14 open book test. Vocab will be due on Friday. Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case due this week, Case #11.  The Court Case will be due on Friday. 
Tuesday: No assignments today as the students will be taking the State ELA Assessment. 
Wednesday: Today students will begin to discuss Chapter 15, Section 1, beginning  on page 402 of the textbook and going through a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 15 Section 1 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 1, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 15: Mississippi’s Literary Tradition Mississippi Writers. Students need to complete the Mississippi Writers worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 15, section 1 located on page 413 of the textbook.  Students will also have 1 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Case 11. Court case will be due on Friday!
Thursday: No assignments today as the students will be taking the State Writing Assessment. 
Friday: Today students will begin to discuss Chapter 15, Section 2, beginning  on page 414 of the textbook and going through a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section.  Students will turn in chapter 15 vocabulary today also! Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 15 Section 2 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 2, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 15: Vocab Review.  Students need to complete the Vocab review worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 15, section 2 located on page 418 of the textbook.

Week 6, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship and having a unit test at the end of the week. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
 
Monday: Students will spend some time today looking at the Anti-Slavery Alphabet and discussing the meaning of the letters and how it was written. Students will read pages 396 - 397 in their textbook about the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. After reading these pages, students will go to the website The Anti-Slavery Alphabet | Digital Archives MDAH (ms.gov) to see pictures of the Anti-Slavery Alphabet. Students will use the Anti-Slavery Alphabet to write an alphabet of their own for the 8th grader as they prepare to leave the middle school and go to the high school. For some this may mean sports and a chance to shine as an athlete, for others it may mean earning a scholarship and fulfilling their dream of being a doctor or lawyer one day.  What does it mean to you?  Students are to write something for all 26 letters of the alphabet. Students may include teachers, classes, memories, Dr. Hoye and Mr. Gray in their alphabet.  This alphabet will be a way to leave their legacy to Lake Middle School. Students will complete the cartoon analysis worksheet on the 10 year challenge cartoon found in Mississippi Today. Students will finish their 8th grade alphabet if it was not completed in class today.  Alphabets are due on Friday!
 
Tuesday: Today students will begin to discuss Chapter 14, Section 3, beginning  on page 386 of the textbook and going through a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 14 Section 3 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 3, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 14: Vocabulary review . Students need to complete the vocab review worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 14, section 3 located on page 395 of the textbook. Students will also have 1 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Case 10. Court case will be due on Friday!
 
Wednesday: No assignments today as the students will be taking the State Science Assessment. 
 
Thursday: No assignments today as the students will be taking the State Math Assessment. 

 

Friday: Students will take an open book test today on Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship. This week in Mississippi Studies we will be learning about Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship. Students will still continue to be in boot camp 2 days a week, so it is important that they stay current with their Canvas to keep up with grades and assignments. Tuesday: Today students will begin to discuss Chapter 14, Section 1, beginning  on page 376 of the textbook and going through a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 14 Section 1 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 1, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship Research. Students need to complete the local government and citizenship research  worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 14, section 1 located on page 381 of the textbook. Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Cases 8 and 9. Court cases will be due on Friday! Also students will have their final counties test on the 82 counties in Mississippi.  This test will cover the bottom section of the state.

After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 2, students will be given a worksheet to complete Chapter 14: Local Government and Citizenship Know Your Facts . : Students need to complete the local government and citizenship know your facts  worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 14, section 2 located on page 385 of the textbook. Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Cases 8 and 9. Court cases will be due on Friday! Also students will have their final counties test on the 82 counties in Mississippi.  This test will cover the bottom section of the state.

Monday: No assignments today as the students are in boot camp.
Tuesday: Today students will discuss Chapter 13, Section 3, beginning on page 358 of the textbook and going through a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 13 Section 3 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 3, students will be given a vocabulary review worksheet to complete. Students need to complete the vocabulary review worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 13, section 3 located on page 370 of the textbook. Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Cases 6 and 7. Court cases will be due on Thursday this week! Also, students will have a chapter test on Thursday on Chapter 13: Federal and State Government. Students need to begin reading the chapter and preparing for this test.
Wednesday: No daily assignment as the students will be in boot camp today. Students will need to complete the Understanding the Facts questions 1-12 on page 373 of the textbook for homework. Students are to write questions and answers.
Thursday: Students will turn in Supreme Court cases 6 and 7 today since there will be no school on Friday!  Students will take an open book test today on Chapter 13: Federal and State governments. Tests should be completed in 1 class period and turned in today! After completing the test, students will be given a list of vocabulary terms for Chapter 14 to begin defining, identifying, and listing important details about. This vocabulary will be due next week on Wednesday!! Students will need to be consistently working on the vocabulary that was given in class today.  Vocab will be due on Thursday of next week!!

Week 3, 4th Nine Weeks

This week we will begin Chapter 13 discussing federal, state, and local governments.  Homework and assignments are as follows:
Monday: No assignments as the students will be in boot camp today. 
Tuesday: Today students will discuss Chapter 13, Section 1, beginning on page 348 of the textbook and going through a power point presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 1, students will be given a worksheet to complete on the Mississippi State Legislature. Students need to complete the MS State Legislature worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section. Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 13, section 1 located on page 350 of the textbook. Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Cases 4 and 5. Also students will have their second counties test on Friday, central Mississippi. Students also need to be continuously working on the Chapter 13 vocab that is due Friday. 
Wednesday: No assignments as the students will be in boot camp today. 
Thursday: Today students will discuss Chapter 13, Section 2, beginning on page 351 of the textbook and going through a power point presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 1, students will be given a worksheet to complete on the House and the Senate with a Venn diagram to complete. Students need to complete the House and Senate Venn diagram worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 13, section 2 located on page 357 of the textbook. Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week, Cases 4 and 5. Also students will have their second counties test on Friday, central Mississippi.  Students also need to be continuously working on the Chapter 13 vocab that is due Friday. 
Friday: Students will take a test today on the central portion of Mississippi for their 2nd countries test. After the test, students will visit the website www.house.gov/representatives/#state_me to find the four members of the Mississippi delegation to the House of Representatives. Here students can click on the representatives' names and see all kinds of information, personal and professional. Students will make a chart with each representative’s name, local office address, phone number, party affiliation, legislative committee assignments, and positions on major issues, such as budget deficit, foreign policy, health care, immigration, etc. If the students do not finish their representatives charts in class today they must finish for homework and turn in Monday.

Week 2, 4th Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies students will continue working on Chapter 12 and be prepared for a Chapter test on Friday.  With boot camp beginning this week assignments will all be posted on Canvas for the students to access.  Even though I will not physically see them every day or verbally assign work, they will still have work to do for me. Students must stay up to date on canvas and check for assignments daily!  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: No assignments as the students will be in boot camp today.
Tuesday: Today students will discuss Chapter 12, Section 3, beginning on page 330 of the textbook and going through a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 12 Section 3 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. After completing the lecture for today and the guided reading for section 3, students will be given a vocabulary review worksheet. Students need to complete the vocab review worksheet if it is not completed in class, as well as the guided reading for this section. Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 12, section 2 located on page 342 of the textbook. Brochures for the state of Mississippi are due tomorrow!! Students will also have 2 Supreme Court cases due this week, cases 2 and 3 for this nine weeks.
Wednesday: No assignments today as the students will be in boot camp. 
Thursday: Students will be given a copy of the article BP Oil Spill: Facts and Environmental Impact to read today.  After reading the article, students will look at pictures of wildlife, the water, and even the coastland to see the effects of the oil and its lasting effects on the economy of the 4 main states affected: Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama.  https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/oil-spill-100-days-100-photos/13/ shows 100 days and 100 photos from the oil spill. After reading and looking through the photos, students will write a 1 page, 5 paragraph essay (including an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion) persuasive essay on oil rigs in the ocean.  Are they a good thing?  Are they bad?  Does the good outweigh the bad or does the bad outweigh the good?  Which side are you on? Students will complete the Understanding the Facts questions 1-9 located on page 345 of the textbook.  Students are to write questions and answers.  Students need to be familiar with the chapter to prepare them for a chapter 12 test tomorrow, which will be an open book test.  Students will also need to have their 2 Supreme Court cases, 2 and 3 turned in tomorrow.  
Friday: Students will take a test today on Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Economy.  After completing the Chapter 12 test, students will be given a new map to prepare for their second Mississippi Counties Test next Friday. This test will focus on the middle section of the state. Students will then be given a list of vocabulary and important terms for Chapter 13 to begin defining and listing important details, such as what people did and important dates. This vocab list will be due next Friday!  It is a lengthy list! Students need to be working on the vocab list for Chapter 13.  This list will be due on Tuesday.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin with Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village.  Homework and assignments are as follows: 
Monday: Today students will begin discussing Chapter 12: Mississippi in the Global Village, Section 1 on page 320 of the textbook and a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 12 Section 1 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. Students will be given a list of vocabulary terms to be defined, identified, and list key points for the dates, people, and places for  this chapter.  Vocabulary will be due on Wednesday! Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 12, section 1 located on page 325 of the textbook. Students also need to complete the guided reading and work on the vocabulary  given in class today for homework if not completed in class. 
Tuesday: Today students will be given a map of the 82 counties located within the state of Mississippi. Students will be tested on the top portion of the map on Friday! Today the class will visit a website 15 weird Mississippi town names and how they got them (hattiesburgamerican.com) and look at 15 towns in Mississippi with weird names.  This will be a fun and interesting activity for the students to see how many they have heard of!  Students will then use the remainder of the class period to write a 5 paragraph essay about these 15 towns, which ones were their favorites, and why.  Students will need to take notes during the lecture and be able to give supporting details for their thoughts and opinions. This essay will be due tomorrow. Students will need to complete the essay that was assigned in class today for homework if it was not completed in class. Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case due Friday, as well as the chapter 12 vocabulary that was assigned on Monday. 
Wednesday: Today students will discuss Chapter 12, Section 2, beginning  on page 326 of the textbook and going through a powerpoint presentation detailing the key points and important terms found in this section. Students will be given a guided reading assignment to complete as they take individual notes for the chapter.  Students will be prepared to answer any questions about Chapter 12 Section 2 through class discussion and any notes that may be taken. Students will be given a worksheet, Ch 12: Mississippi in the Global Village, Matching to complete in class. Students need to complete a matching worksheet if it is not completed in class.  Students need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions for chapter 12, section 2 located on page 329 of the textbook. Students will have 1 Supreme Court Case due this Friday. Students also need to complete the guided reading given in class today for homework if not completed in class.
Thursday: Today students will research the state of Mississippi to see what all it offers in terms of tourism and traveling. Students will make a brochure on the state of Mississippi, including recreational activities, (fairs, festivals, Ethnic groups, etc), nature (hiking, sightseeing, history, etc) popular places to visit, etc. Students will make their brochure using the Canva website.  Brochures will be due on Wednesday, March 30th.  Brochures must be complete, with information and pictures, facts and interesting information about our state.  Make sure to incorporate some history into your brochure and what would attract people to our state. Students will need to study for their first county’s test tomorrow!!!  Students also need to be continuously working on their brochures, as well as complete 1 Supreme Court Case that will be due tomorrow. 
Friday: Students will take a test today on the top third of the state and the top 27 counties in the state. After the test,students will be given time to continue to work on their Brochures for the state of Mississippi. Students may also use this time to work on Supreme Court Cases as they will be due every Friday of the nine weeks.

Week 7, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies, we will be finishing up Chapter 10 and preparing for a chapter test on Friday.  Homework and assignments for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will cover Chapter 10, Section 3 today and complete a guided reading for that section of the chapter. When we finish the lecture, students will be given a worksheet to complete, Letter From a Birmingham Jail where the students will write a letter back to Dr. King. Students will also complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 286 of the textbook.  Students also need to be getting their 2 Supreme Court Cases done for this week, as well as complete their Brown vs. Board Project that is due Friday.
Tuesday: Today students will watch Dr. King's I Have A Dream Speech and complete a worksheet on the speech.  Students will also recieve a packet of information to complete for homework. 
Wednesday: Students will be given a study guide to complete today to prepare for the chapter 10 test.  Students may also use this time to work on Supreme Court Cases or their Brown vs. Board Project that is due Friday. 
Thursday: Students will continue to work on the study guide to prepare for the chapter 10 test.  Students may also use this time to work on Supreme Court Cases or their Brown vs. Board Project that is due Friday. Study study study!!!!  Chapter 10 test is tomorrow!
Friday:  Students will have a Chapter 10 test today!  Brown vs Board Project is due today!!  2 Supreme Court Cases are due today!!  After the test, students will be given a list of Chapter 11 vocabulary to begin working on.  Chapter 11 vocab will be due on Tuesday!  Students will also be given a map of the Mississippi Counties to begin preparing for labeling the counties tests.

Week 6, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will begin Chapter 10 and discuss many of the important people, events, and places that played a pivotal point in the Civil Rights Movement.  Assignment and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will begin Chapter 10 Section 1 today. Students will cover this section with a power point presentation and a guided reading that goes with this chapter. After the lecture, students will receive a vocabulary list for the chapter that will be due on Friday. Students will also have a homework article to read and answer the questions on Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Students must also be working on their 1 Supreme Court Case that is due this week and the Brown vs Board of Education Project that was assigned and due next Friday, Feb 25th. Students will also answer the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 273 of the textbook. 
Tuesday: Students will begin a lengthy slideshow on the Civil Rights Movement today and have a class discussion on.  After discussion, we will have another assignment on Rosa Parks and an article to complete, Voting Rights Act.  
Wednesday: Students will complete the slideshow today and complete a worksheet, Sequencing Events.  Keep working on vacab, project, and Supreme Court Cases!
Thursday: Students will begin Chapter 10 Section 2 today. Students will cover this section with a power point presentation and a guided reading that goes with this chapter. After the lecture, students will receive a Civil Rights Movement worksheet of events that students will have to put in chronological order, name who was involved, where it happened, and list one major cause and effect of the event. Students will also have a homework article to read and answer the questions on Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Students will also answer the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 277 of the textbook. 
Friday: Students will be given a "Road to Civil Rights" packet to complete today in class.  If the students do not finish this in class, they must finish for homework.   Keep working on your Brown vs. Board Project that is due next Friday!!

Week 5, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 9: Conflict and Change and preparing for a test on Friday.  Assignments and homework are as follows:
Monday: Students will begin discussing the Brown vs. the Board of Topeka Kansas case. Students will take a closer look at Linda Brown, what are human rights, some comparison photos, the closing of the schools, Barbara Johns, and Robert F. Kennedy.  Students will then complete an education questionnaire to turn in. Different Paths Readworks Article will then be given for homework. 
Tuesday: Students will complete their indepth look at the Brown vs. Board of Education case by reading a detailed account of the case and answering a sheet of analysis questions. Following this, the students will be given a study guide of chapter 9 to begin working on for the test on Friday. 
Wednesday: Students will cover Chapter 9, Section 3 today and complete a guided reading that accompanies the chapter.  Students will also complete the Understanding the Facts 1-10 at the end of the chapter for homework, as well as the 3 Reviewing the Section questions at the end of the section. 
Thursday: Students will review today for a chapter test on Friday for Chapter 9. 
Friday: Chapter 9 test today.  After the test, students will be given a project to complete on the Brown vs. Board of Education.  This project will be due on Friday, Feb 25th. The students will also have 1 Supreme Court Case due today!

Monday: Students will spend the day today reviewing for a unit test.  Study study study!!
Tuesday: Today students will take a unit test on the Women's Suffrage Movement.  After the test students will be given the Chapter 9 vocabulary, which will be due Thursday. 
Wednesday: Students will begin Chapter 9: Conflict and Change today with Section 1. Students will go over the section and complete a guided reading. Students will be given a worksheet to complete, Who Am I? and students will need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions on page 246.

Friday: Students will watch a documentary today on the Great Depression and the Stock Market crash of 1929 that began the downfall. Also students will have 1 Supreme Court case due this Friday.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up our unit on the Women's Suffrage and preparing for a test next week. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will be turning in their Amendment Projects today and presentations will begin. Students will present their creative component to the class as well as tell what their Amendment means. They will also have a homework packet including Created Equal, Justifying Inequality, and the Happy Mother worksheets. 
Tuesday: We will finish up presentations today for the Amendment Project.  Students will be given worksheets, Contesting Inequality and Towards an Equal Rights Amendment to work on at the end of class and finish for homework.  
Wednesday: Students will go through a power point presentation today on the Women's Suffrage Movement. They will then be given worksheets to complete on specific dates that were important days for this movement. They will also be given a worksheet, The Women's Suffrage Movement, Part 1 for homework. 
Thursday: Students will go through another slideshow today that highlights important people, places, and movements during the Women's Rights Movement. They will also be given a 18 question worksheet to complete as we navigate through the slideshow. After the lecture, students will be given a packet of worksheets, The Women's Suffrage Movement Part 2, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and a writing activity to complete for homework. 
Friday: Students will be put into 2 groups today and will have a silent debate on the women's suffrage movement.  They will be given posters to analyze and will make arguments for their side.  For homework, students will be given 3 posters to analyze.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be continuing our unit on the Women's Suffrage Unit.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:

Tuesday: Students will be catching up from Benchmark testing days last week with Math and Science.
Wednesday: Students will be out of the classroom today due to ELA Benchmark testing. 
Thursday: Today students will be given a mock test to complete in class. Students will be allowed to use their textbooks, the internet, or other activities throughout the week to assist them in choosing the correct answer on their worksheet. Students will receive a grade for the assignment, it will be returned to them as a study guide for an upcoming test next week on this unit. As the students complete the mock test, they will have a Readworks article to complete, “The Fight for Women’s Suffrage” Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week.

Week 1, 3rd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies, we will begin a unit on the Women's Suffrage Movement. Students will spend the next few weeks discussing the Women's Suffrage Movement and how women were granted the right to vote. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: no school.
Tuesday: Students will be assigned an Amendment Project today, detailing one of the Amendments to the Constitution of the United States.  Students will be assigned an amendment and will have to create a creative component to the project and construct a 6-page paper including a works cited page and a title page. Students will also be given a list of vocabulary with the women's suffrage movement that will be completed by Friday, as well as their one Supreme Court Case. Students will then be given an article to complete for homework, Aint I A Woman?
Wednesday: Today students will be broken into groups and given a source to analyze and answer questions about. Groups will work collectively to read each source, determine why the source was written, and try to understand the meaning of each document. Students will then be given a worksheet, "The Fight for Women's Suffrage Worksheet" and discuss Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Thursday: Students will be given a vocabulary packet to complete, including a chart, definitions, drawing a picture, examples, etc. Then students will complete the worksheet "American Women Get the Vote in 1920 and answer the questions that follow. Vocab for this unit and 1 Supreme Court Case are also due on Friday.
Friday: Students will be given packets of information, "Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Students will read through the information presented and participate in group discussion. Students will then be given an article to complete, "19th Amendment" for homework.

Week 8, 2nd Nine Weeks

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 8 and getting ready for our Nine Weeks Test next week.  
Monday: Students will be given a Chapter 8 study guide today and will use the class period to complete this study guide.  Students will get a head start on reading the chapter as they fill out the study guide and look for answers in each of the sections of the chapter. Students will also only have 1 Supreme Court Case due this week on Wednesday.  
Tuesday: Students will go over the study guide orally in class to ensure that everyone has the correct answers to study for the test on Wednesday. Study study study!!!!
Wednesday: Students will take their final test grade of the nine weeks today with a Chapter 8 test. Students will also turn in their only Supreme Court Case due this week today.  After the test, students will be given an article on the Great Migration.  Students will list 5 advantages and 5 disadvantages of the Great Migration and decide if they would have moved their family at that time. 
Thursday: Students will receive a packet today on the Jim Crow laws.  There will be a chart located on the back page for students to complete of the most ridiculous laws and write an interpretation. 
Friday: Students will complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two governors of MS that were discussed in Chapter 8, James K. Vardaman and Theodore Bilbo.  Students will then write a one page organized paper on how these two men compare and contrast to one another.

Monday: Today students will cover Chapter 8 Section 1 and complete a guided reading for this section.  Students will then receive a copy of the Chapter 8 vocabulary that will be due on Thursday.  Students will also need to answer the Reviewing the Section questions located on page 218 of the textbook. Students will also have 2 Supreme Court Cases due this week on Friday. 
Tuesday: Students will read the Of Special Interest on page 219 of the textbook about President Theodore Roosevelt and then analyze a political cartoon.  
Wednesday: Today students will cover Chapter 8 Section 2 and complete a guided reading for this section.  Students will then receive a true false worksheet that will be due on Thursday.  Students will also need to answer the Reviewing the Section questions located on page 225 of the textbook.
Thursday: Today students will be given an article to read and analyze on the women's suffrage movement and what it meant for the state of MS. Students will then write a one page 5 paragraph informative essay on what they read.

Tuesday: Students will have the class period today to work on their Civil War Battle Project.  This project is due on Friday, November 12th.  Students must complete all components of this project.

Monday: Students be finishing up a Vocabulary test from Chapter 6. Then students will be given some class time to work on their Civil War Battle Projects. For homework, the students must complete the Understanding the Facts 1-10 on page 183 of the textbook. 
Tuesday: Students will cover Chapter 6, Section 3 and complete a Guided Reading that accompanies that section. Students will also receive a Civil War Battlefields worksheet to complete in class. Students also need to be continuously working on their Civil War Battle Projects that are due next Friday, November 12th. Students also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 180 of the textbook. 
Wednesday: Students will be given a study guide to complete for Chapter 6 in class.  The chapter 6 test will be Friday.

This week in Mississippi Studies, the students will begin Chapter 6: The Civil War and Reconstruction Chapter. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will have 3 worksheets to complete in class today: The 1850's: Crisis and Compromise, The Road to Civil War, and American Sectionalism and the Path to War. If these worksheets are not completed in class, they will need to be finished for homework.  Chapter 6 Vocabulary List 1 is also due on Tuesday.  Students will be given List 2 today to begin working on, but it is not due until Thursday.  
Tuesday: Students will be given a new project today: The Civil War Battle Research Project. Each student will be given a battle and another topic to write a 2 page paper on concerning the Civil War.  This project is due on Friday, November 12th. Students will cover Chapter 6 Section 1 today in class and receive a Guided Reading to complete afterwards.  Students also need to complete the Reviewing the Section questions located on page 159 of the textbook and continue to work on List 2 Vocab that is due on Thursday.  The students also need to remember they have a Supreme Court Case due on Friday as well (due every week!)
Wednesday: Students will complete a worksheet today in class called Famous Union and Confederate Generals in Mississippi. Students may use the remainder of the class period today to work on their List 2 vocabulary, Supreme Court Case, or Civil War Battle.  This is a working class period.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 5 and continuing our talk about Antebellum Mississippi and slavery. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will explore the living conditions of slaves by exploring the Eustatia (Mississippi) cotton plantation account book found at the website www.pbs.org/wnet/slavery/experience/living/feature.html. Students will write down 10 facts they learned about the daily life of slaves from this primary source. Students will also visit the website http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/pds/maai/enslavement/text3/plantationhughes.pdf. Students will write a 1 page description of the construction, furnishings, and layout of the slave cabin as Hughes described it. This essay will be a one page, 5 paragraph essay that includes an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. This essay will be due on Wednesday. Students also need to remember that their Chapter 5 vocabulary is due tomorrow.
Tuesday: Students will cover Chapter 5, Section 3 today and be given a guided reading to complete with this section of the chapter. After covering the chapter, students will turn to page 148 in their textbook. Students will analyze the map of the presidential candidates and the amount of electoral votes each candidate received. How many are there now? How many did each candidate win? Who was the winner? Now divide the electoral votes won by each candidate by the total number of electoral votes to determine the percentage of the nation that was won by each candidate. Students will also need to answer the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 149 and complete the essay on the slave cabin that is due tomorrow.
Wednesday: Students will work independently through Chapter 5, Sections 1-3 to complete the study guide given today and answer the questions for each section. Also, students need to answer the Understanding the Facts questions 1-10 located on page 151 of the textbook.
Thursday: Students will review for a Chapter test tomorrow! Also, students will need to have their 2 Supreme Court Cases ready to turn in on Friday. Two cases will be due every Friday.

Week 1, 2nd Nine Weeks

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a great Fall Break and enjoyed a few days of relaxation and rest.  This week in Mississippi Studies we will be looking closely at a few court cases that were important to our country and also beginning Chapter 5: Antebellum Mississippi. Assignments and homework for the week are as follows: 
Monday: Students will begin a Supreme Court Binder this week that they will maintain throughout the remainder of the school year. Students will pick 1 case this week to answer questions about and analyze. (after this week it will be 2 cases per week) Cases will be due every Friday. Students also read and discussed the Aaron Burr Conspiracy today.  They were given material to read and questions to answer about this controversy. 
Tuesday: Today students will look into the Dred Scott Decision and read some facts about this case. Questions will be embedded in the reading to keep the students on track with the course of events. Students must also write 2 editorials in response to the Dred Scott decision; one from a post slavery Southern perspective, and one from an anti-slavery or abolitionist Northern perspective. Students are to headline their editorials with headlines phrased similar to how newspapers are titled. Info should be accurate. Editorials should state a position. 
Wednesday: Students will be given worksheets to review several of the compromises that were put into place before the Civil War called Short Term Compromises.  They will also be given a sheet called Three Compromises about the Missouri Compromise, The Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas Nebraska Act. Lastly, they will be given an political cartoon analysis worksheet and 6 cartoons pertaining to the election of 1860 to analyze. All of these resources will review where Chapter 5 left off and Chapter 6 is about to pick up. 
Thursday: Students will begin Chapter 5: Antebellum Mississippi today by covering section 1. Students will receive a guided reading to complete and a vocabulary list for Chapter 5. Vocabulary will be due on Tuesday.  Students will also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions on page 132 of the textbook.
Friday: Students will cover Chapter 5, Section 2 today in class. They will recieve a guided reading for this section and a worksheet to complete in class, Short Answers.  If these are not finished in class, they will need to be completed for homework. Students will be given a guided reading for this section, as well as a worksheet to complete in class, The Role of Compromises.  If not completed in class, students must complete these for homework. Students must also complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions on page 102 of the textbook. Students will also be given a Chapter 4 study guide to start completing today.  It is not due until Friday, but due to the length of the study guide, it will be given several days early to ensure that the students have ample time to complete it.

Students will be given a guided reading for this section, as well as a worksheet to complete in class, Using Primary Source Documents.  If not completed in class, students must complete these for homework. This week in MS Studies, students will be finishing up Chapter 3 and preparing for a chapter test on Friday.  Assignments and homework for this week are as follows:
Monday: Students Early Explorer Project is due today!!  Students will have a political cartoon analysis worksheet for in class work today. They will also have a list of causes and effects for Early European Exploration  that must be placed in the correct chart for homework. 
Tuesday: Students will cover Section 4 of Chapter 3 today.  A guided reading will be given for students to complete on this section. For homework students must write a half page first person account of the ceremony from the point of view of one of the participants in the picture. Students must also complete the 3 questions at the end of the section located on page 85 of the textbook. 
Wednesday: Students will watch a short video on the Revolutionary War today and then be given a Chapter 3 study guide to complete. 
Thursday: Students will review for a Chapter 3 test today.
Friday: Chapter 3 Test today. After the completion of the test, students will receive vocabulary for chapter 4 to complete by Monday.

This week in Mississippi Studies we will be working in Chapter 3, Early European and Spanish Explorers.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:

Tuesday: Students will cover Chapter 3, section 2 today in class.  There will be a guided reading given to accompany the section. A worksheet will also be given for a vocabulary review.  If not finished in class, it must be completed for homework.  Students will also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 77 of the textbook. 
Wednesday: Students will read and research today about Natchez MS and how this area has been reported as being haunted over the last few years.  Students will find 2 articles discussing this topic and do a one page article review, including a personal reflection paragraph.  If not completed in class, students must complete this for homework.  Students also need to be working on their Early Explorer Project, which is due on Monday, Sept 13th.
Thursday: Students will cover Chapter 3, section 3 today in class.  There will be a guided reading given to accompany the section. If not finished in class, it must be completed for homework.  Students will also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 82 of the textbook.
Friday: Students will review political cartoons today.  A cartoon will be given in class to interpretation.  Students will then be given a chart of causes and effects that must be filled in on European Exploration.  Both of these activities need to be completed for homework if not completed in class today.  Students also need to complete the Early Explorer Project this weekend to be turned in on Monday!

This week in Mississippi Studies the students will be working in Chapter 2, Native Mississippians.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday: Students will be given thier next project today, Native Americans in Mississippi.  This project is due on Wednesday, September 1st. Students will then be given an article that we will read aloud as a whole and discuss. Students will write a one page summary on the Trail of Tears, stating what it would have been like to have suffered as a Native American at that time.  Homework: students will answer the Understanding the Facts 1-9 questions located on page 63 of the textbook.
Tuesday: Students will cover chapter 2, section 3 today in class. Students will complete the Guided Reading for this section, as well as a vocabulary review sheet for homework. Students also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 57 of the textbook. Students are to write QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!
Wednesday: Students will cover chapter 2, section 4 today in class. Students will complete the Guided Reading for this section, as well as the worksheet on Samuel's Memory. Students are to read the passage and answer the questions that follow. For homework students will complete one of the additional sources included in the packet today. Students also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 60 of the textbook for homework.

Its Week 2!!  I hope everyone is settling in and finding the new year going smoothly so far!  This week in Mississippi Studies we will be finishing up Chapter 1 with a test and beginning Chapter 2.  Homework and assignments are as follows:
Monday: Students will be given a study guide to complete for Chapter 1.  This study guide needs to be completed by Tuesday.  Students also need to be continuously working on their Hurricane Project that was assigned last week. This project is due on Friday, August 20th.
Tuesday: Students will review the study guide orally, giving each student the opportunity to correct any wrong answers for studying purposes.  Students will have a Chapter 1 test tomorrow, Wednesday.  After reviewing the study guide, students will be given some time to work on their Hurricane Project in class.  
Wednesday: Students will have a test today on Chapter 1 today.  After completing the test, students will be given a vocabulary list for Chapter 2 to begin defining, identifying, and listing important facts for the terms listed. Vocabulary will be due on Tuesday, Aug 24th. Students may choose to spend this time working on their Hurricane Projects also.

Welcome back!!  I hope you all had a fabulous summer and are ready for school to be back in session!!  Our agenda for the first few days will be full of covering dress code, handbook, assigning textbooks, talking about rules and procedures for classroom behavior, bathroom privileges, bell ringers, homework and classwork, makeup work, and other important topics for this subject:
Thursday, August 5th and Friday, August 6th will be used for these days.
The following week, we will dive in head first into Chapter 1 as we begin to look at the geography of Mississippi.  Assignments and homework for the week are as follows:
Monday - Students will take a "test" today to see what they know about their state. This is a fun activity just to gauge the knowledge of the students.  Students will then cover section 1 of Chapter 1 with lecture and a power point presentation. A guided reading for this section will be given immediately following the lecture. Guided readings for the chapters will always be due on test day.  This allows the students to keep their guided readings to help in preparation for chapter tests.  Students will also be given a list of vocabulary words to begin defining.  Vocab will be due on THURSDAY! Students are encouraged to work on vocab throughout the week any time they are given to work on assignments.  Students will answer the 3 Reviewing the Section question located on page 7 of the textbook for homework. Students are to write questions and answers.
Tuesday - Chapter 1, Section 2: Fair Weather will be covered today in class.  Again, students will be given a guided reading to accompany the section to be completed by the test day for Chapter 1. Students will also be given a map worksheet to complete in class for this day.  Students will need to answer the 3 Reviewing the Section questions located on page 13 of the textbook for homework.  Students are to write questions and answers. Also continue to work on vocab!!
Wednesday - Chapter 1, Section 3: Fertile Soil will be covered today in class.  A guided reading will be given to accompany this section and need to be completed by test day for Chapter 1. Students will also be given a worksheet to complete, Using Geography Skills. Students also need to complete the 3 Reviewing the Section questions on page 24 of the textbook.  Don't forget that vocabulary is due tomorrow!
Thursday - Students will be assigned their first project today, a comparison of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Camille.  This project will be due on Friday, August 20th. Students will be given an interactive worksheet A Place Called Mississippi. It includes websites that will assist the students with completing the worksheet. If the students do
not finish this activity, they will finish for homework. 
Friday - Chapter 1, Section 4: Natural Resources will be covered today in class.  Again students will be given a guided reading to accompany the section to be completed by test day for Chapter 1.  A vocab review worksheet will also be assigned. Students need to be continuously working on their Hurricane Project. This project is due Friday, August 20th. Students will also need to complete the Reviewing the Section Questions 1-3 located on page 33 of the textbook. Students are to write questions and answers
